A teacher-directed model can limit learning in the classroom because it is difficult to ensure you have 30+ students' attention of your learning. Many times the focus is only on a few students, while the rest are not held accountable for the learning. In a teacher-directed model, the teacher is doing most of the work.

Teacher-directed learning has the focus in the wrong place; the teacher is focused upon giving information to students rather than students learning the information. Student ownership is removed and that can lead to teacher burnout. As Laura said, the teacher is doing all the work.

Kerry Blank

It is important for students to be creators rather than merely consumers to increase their critical thinking skills, independence, and resilience. This allows the teacher to become the "guide on the side" and truly direct and support learning. It also allows a lesson to go in the direction that the student needs rather than the just the teacher. I had a student once who said to me that she would rather do a psychoanalysis of a character rather than a typical literary analysis. We agreed on the rubric - it had to include textual evidence and research-based analyses. Her paper was amazing and was a much indicator of what she understood about Poe's story than my literary paper format. We both learned more when she took the lead.
Kerry Blank

The teacher directed teaching model is very hands-off. Students are being given the information rather than taking ownership of their learning and making important self discoveries that make learning more meaningful. It places all the responsibility on the teacher, rather than the student. When the student is unable to take responsibility for their learning it creates a frustrating environment for both teacher and student

Lindsay Bennett

It is important for students to become creators instead of consumers so they can develop their thinking skills and increase their independence. The students need to have a buy-in to their learning, and allowing them to be creative gives them that buy-in.

Teacher directed learning places limitations on what and how students learn. It also creates an opportunity for students to “fake” understanding of the material. With teacher directed learning, students are relying only on the methods of the teacher to learn and understand. There is no opportunities for them to seek out the information on their own and learn through self discovery. This gives students opportunity to explain what they learn, demonstrating that they actually have achieved understand which is opposite of the teacher led model. As in the video, the teacher overtime feels the students should know it. When teachers ask students “Do you understand?”, it is natural for students to answer “Yes” for a couple reasons: students think they should understand it so they give the answer they feel is correct and/or they are frustrated because they don’t understand it and they say yes just so they can move in and out themselves out of their misery.
