         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jocelyn Bell Burnell was born in Northern Ireland in 1943. Her father was a professor of astronomy at the University of Belfast and her mother was a schoolteacher. She grew up in Lurgan and attended the Preparatory Department of Lurgan College. At the time, the school's policy was that boys could study technical subjects and girls were expected to study cooking and cross-stitching. However, her parents and others challenged the policy, which allowed her to study science. She then joined The Mount School where her teachers were impressed by her physic level and encouraged her to continue on this path. Jocelyn Bell Burnell's childhood was shaped by her love of astronomy. She excelled in her studies, eventually earning a place at the University of Glasgow.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>She attended the University of Glasgow, where she earned a bachelor's degree in physics in 1965 with honour. While working on her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, Jocelyn made a startling discovery that would change the course of her career. She was studying radio emissions from the stars when she noticed a strange, pulsing signal coming from a star called CP 1919. Jocelyn and her supervisor, Antony Hewish, realized that this was a new type of astronomical object, which they called a "pulsar." Pulsars are now known to be rapidly rotating neutron stars.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jocelyn Bell Burnell's discovery of pulsars has been hailed as one of the most important astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit a beam of radio waves that sweep across the sky like a lighthouse. When this beam of radio waves hits the Earth, it produces a pulse of radio emission that can be detected by radio telescopes.Burnell was a graduate student at the University of Cambridge in 1967 when she made the discovery. She was conducting a radio survey of the sky with her supervisor, Antony Hewish, when she noticed a strange signal coming from a star in the constellation of Vulpecula. This signal was unlike anything they had ever seen before and it was coming from a star that was not known to be emitting any radio waves.After further observations, it was determined that this signal was periodic, meaning it repeated at regular intervals. This was an incredible discovery, as it indicated that the star was rotating. Further analysis showed that the star was rotating incredibly fast, at a rate of once every 1.33 seconds. This was the first pulsar ever discovered.Since the discovery of the first pulsar, over 2,000 more have been found. Pulsars have provided astronomers with a wealth of information about the Universe. They have been used to study the physics of extreme conditions, such as the interior of neutron stars. Pulsars have also been used to test theories of gravity, such as Einstein's theory of general relativity.Burnell's discovery of pulsars has had a lasting impact on astronomy and has helped to further our understanding of the Universe.</div>]]></description>

She has also been involved in the search for extraterrestrial life, and has helped to develop new instrumentation and techniques for observing the universe.&nbsp;<br><br>Jocelyn has gone on to make many contributions to the field of astronomy, including the discovery of X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursters. She worked on the development of radio telescopes and is currently a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. In recent years, she has been involved in the search for gravitational waves.<br><br>Burnell's career is an inspiration to many young women who are interested in science and engineering.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Jocelyn Bell Burnell's awards are many and varied. She was the first woman to be elected as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and in 2018 she was awarded the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. She has also received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the University of Glasgow, and the 2018 Institute of Physics President's Medal.Bell Burnell has been a tireless advocate for equal opportunities for women in science, and her work has been recognised with a number of awards. In 1999 she was awarded the Athena Prize for her work in promoting the role of women in science, and in 2007 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She has also received honorary degrees from a number of universities, including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leicester, and the University of Aberdeen.Bell Burnell's accomplishments are all the more impressive given that she was not born into a wealthy family and had to overcome a number of barriers in her path to becoming one of the world's leading astrophysicists. She is an inspiration to women everywhere, and her work is a reminder that anything is possible if you are willing to work hard and follow your dreams.</div>]]></description>
