Slide 1, Chapter 1

Sullivan was the first one to spot the fire, he started to warn everyone and help his animals. He had a peg leg, so it took him a second to help his animals because he had gotten stuck. He only had saved one of the cows.

Everything was made out of wood, some say Chicago was ready to burn in 1871. They even made there streets out of wood, which is the reason why the fire was spreading so fast.

A lot of people are now aware of the fire, but they want to warn more people. Goll, one of the citizens, was supposed to hit the alarm. No one actually know if Goll lied about sending the alarms or the alarm box failed to work.

When people first heard fire they all swarmed toward De Koven Street, many people were helping each other. They would help drag out clothes, furniture, and their goods. Some people just stood there watching the flames, they were in shock that this fire was getting so big and taking over there city.

The wind lifted the fire hundreds of feet in the sky, everyone was aware of the fire by now. Many police and firefighters have stepped in to help stop this fire. They are now ripping down fences and sheds to try and help stop this fire.

After the first signal was sent, William Brown watch the fire from his high perch. After some time of watching the fire he grew more and more nervous about this fire growing. Without Schaffers permission, he turned in a second alarm to bring reinforcements.

Everyone was going frantic, a lot of people during this either lost their footing or were pushed into the busy street. There was animals running around, if you got in a horse's or a cow's way you would've gotten stepped on.

Things started to fall, buildings couldn't hold up anymore. Everyone was screaming and crying after the buildings had fallen. They were scared for there children and families during this time.

A citizen named, James Hildreth and his men were trying to keep the fire for spreading to the south. After they failed a couple of times, James relived how much power they actually needed. His helpers started blasting house on Harrison Street.

Men who wrote about there experiences during the Great Fire, portrayed women as passive and helpless. Saying they would only wait for their husbands, brothers, or some other man to save them. If you look beyond what they are saying women were very active and strong.

The burnt district was over four miles, and one mile wide. 17,500 building and 73 miles of street had been destroyed.

They city had no idea what todo with the water shortage, and there was never a real solution. There was only a few water wagons available, only few could use them daily.

The fire was done, but everyone wanted to know who started the fire. They did not care if it was on purpose or accident. After a little bit the newspaper just blamed it on a old lady milking her cow and knocked down a lanter. Some don't think its true but some actually believe this happened.

People started blaming the poor, which is not unique for Chicago. Everyone just wanted to blame someone for putting there whole city through this mess, peoples families and friends got hurt in this process.

Slide 15, Chicago Now

Chicago now is way different than what it used to be. Chicago has always been a busy place, with a lot of people. Many buildings are tall and made out of glass or even metal. They have a lot of new things to offer. They have new vehicles going around, and a lot of different restaurants. Now they do not have barns, so if they were to set somewhere on fire they would probably be able to stop it quickly. Without everything being made out of wood Chicago is much more safe than it was in 1871.
