Oil would be much less useful if we didn’t use plastic, and plastic is incredibly important to modern civilization, and is incredibly cheap and versatile. Steel is an alloy of iron, coal, and some other materials, without which we would have to use iron as a main metal, which is far weaker than steel. Without concrete or steel we wouldn’t be able to build structures taller than a few stories tall. Synthetic materials allow us to innovate and improve life. Making some of these materials is detrimental to the planet, but without plastic, steel, concrete, electronics, bronze, aluminum, or other synthetic materials we might still be in the stone ages without being able to make even bronze, without medicine or science, and the environment would be the least of our worries. Synthetic materials even help us realize that the climate is changing, and are helping us fix it.
