Nicholas A. Booker

Mrs. Collins

Native American Sports

30 August 2018

Atuttama’s Great Return To The Field!!!

After five long months, Atuttama has finally returned to the field as the Aztec Armadillos beat the Cherokee Camels. Atuttama was undoubtedly the Aztec’s strongest teammate in their national Stickball game. It was devastating when Atuttama suffered a concussion last season while playing against the Cherokee Camels last season but he seems ready to take control of this game and exact his revenge. He scored an amazing seven points this game, just falling behind his previous record of 9 points in a single game. We go now to Atuttama to ask about how he felt he played this game.

When ask about his recovery and how he played in the game Atuttama responded “Well to tell you the truth i was only required to spend five months outside of the league, i really only needed a month of recovery before i was able to start training and getting my edge back. Now i’m in the best shape of my life and ready to win the championship this year.” Then Atuttama was asked about the rules about how sometimes the losing team would be sentenced to death. “Because no one would play then, Stickball, a native game that is the forerunner of lacross, can be played by a large number of players, sometimes involving entire tribal communities. At the end of the day it is only a game and shouldn’t every take priority over your entire life.”

Naturally after losing such an important game the Cherokee Camels were distraught, with the coach screaming at them it was hard to watch the faces of these young men who played so hard. After the situation calmed down we talked to the Camels own star, Waya.

When asked how Waya felt about the loss he responded humbly with “I feel as though we all played at 100% and i'm proud of my team, Atuttama is a great Stickball player and im not going to deny that. We’ll just have to work harder next year! To tell you the truth me and Atuttama are good friends outside of the game which only motivates me more to push harder and beat the Armadillos.”

It great seeing boys at this age being a good sport even if the outcome wasn't exactly what they were looking for, “Lacrosse has it origins in a tribal game played by eastern woodland Native americans” and thats why its so fun to watch. Come out and support the Aztec Armadillos next week in the quarter finals against the Sioux Snakes. GO ARMADILLOS!!!

Sources:

https://www.warpaths2peacepipes.com/indian-tribes/indian-tribes-list.htm

http://www.cherokeeheritage.org/attractions/stick-ball/

http://www.cherokee.org/About-The-Nation/Culture/General/Stickball-a-ne-jo-di

https://www.chickasaw.net/Our-Nation/Culture/Society/Stickball.aspx

The america game of baseball first appeared during 1800s the sport had its origins in several european bat-and-ball games including the english game of arounds, and took a variety of forms in different localities.at the start of this game everything was in disarray nothing was organized

I had a little interview with Alexander Cartwright told me that he invented a few rules for the game because in the 1840s his way of playing was very different from today they had a bat ,and a ball but now Alexander added a lot more balls, and more bat for each player on his team the small team was a Knickerbocker club.

The students did not have gloves to be able to grab the ball the only thing that was to grab it with their own hands many of them had their hands already hurt but that did not invite them to play they loved this sport so much after many years of playing among themselves a Once they played with another university they were all so excited that they practiced night and day.

In 1844 at 8: a.m. the game started. the alexander team was so good that many people supported the team they looked so happy, and had the great victory after that games they started to play many times in autumn.there was a day when the students needed money to organize matches, and the game increased and decreased some students no longer had interest in that sport but some students of West Philadelphia University entered the game was developed.

For most of its first three or four decades this team was best known as the "University Nine;" after all this time new teams of different clase the new teams include young girls It was a beautiful experience that happened to meet that great team know their new sports, and I am so grateful for the interview I had in Mr. Alexander Cartwright.

The time for trees to let their leaves fall is upon us, as we prepare for the wind season we welcomed it with our annual Stick Game two sundowns ago. In the Atlantic seaboard, around the Great Lakes, and in the South. We played some games like Lacrosse, Shinny, Snow-Snake, these games was more that just games, we build body and spirit through exercise, these games were played by all age groups. That wind season we played Lacrosse, this game is the most known of ours games and is the most common games around this area and in the south. Lacrosse is played with a ball made of either wood or buckskin which was caught with curved rackets with two poles although in some areas only one was used. That time there were hundreds of players more than the last time, we had to play against the new tribe of that time, the tribe of the north The High Land, they was a easy team. After the tribe of the South, We had to play against the tribe of North The Turtles, and then against the tribe of the big pound The Ducks, and at the final, for sure that we had to play against The Mountain Lion, because they were so fast and they have a great resistance, and was for sure that they were at the final. The Mountain Lions were a hard team, that was for what we trained every single day, we thought that if we will play against they that will be a great honor. The time passed very fast we defeated The High Land, it was easy. They were a good team. Then we had to play against the Turtles, the game started and they commenced strong and scored the first point, we did not let them scored. We were face to face 8-8, they scored one more point, but they were so tired that it was an opportunity for us to make our final move. It was our time and we started to scored points, the game finished with ours victory. That night the tribe celebrated ours triumph with a great feast. The sun came up and a new day began, our next competitor were The Ducks, they were a good team, but not than good as us. The game was going fast and they scored two points. They had superb moves but not all the intensity and determination that we had. We scored point and point after point, they keep trying and trying, but we control the game. The game ended with ours victory, it was a good game!.The time was going to fast we had to rest good for the great game at the final, we had to play against the strongest team. There was the day that we had waiting all night, the final!. The last game was beginning, and we were exciting to being. I felt each second, I did not can wait to start this. We Match face to face, I counted each second. Finally we were in position, and the game starts!. I calm down and take the ball, I passed the ball to my Partner and he scored it, the first point!. After a while we scored the second point, the opponents looked confident, and after a few minutes They started to play well and scored the first and second point, then the third point. They were fast and scored two points more. Now we had the ball and we try to scored a point, I throw the ball and the other team save it, and moving fast he passed the ball to his partner and scored one point more. We were so desperate and we decided to copy some ideas of The Ducks, we started to do some moves and make strategies. We made resistance and contract finally we got the tie. So we were 14-15 against, the game was ending very soon, we did not have to much time, we had to flip the things. So we put more resistance and we take the best opportunity to attack. We had the ball, me and the others two went at the front to try to sored a point, but We did not do it, the opponents had the ball and they ran, I was in the middle of the field waiting, we put a great defense and we got the ball. Quickly my team passed the ball to me and I ran faster, they were Obstacles, So I passed the ball back to my partner, He passed me the ball back and I scored!. Then They had the ball, we were a little worried about that, we were 15-15. The game will end with who the fist that score a the point. The mountain lions had the ball and started to move slowly, they were worried to. We did not had to make a mistake , they were so close to the goal, but we did not allow them to make a point, we resisted and waited for a change. The opponent had the ball and He try to make a point, he threw the ball, but it was slowly and I catched the ball. I ran to the opposite goal and I passed the ball. My partner passed the ball, and the ball was passed and passed, but we did can not scored something. I moved a little back and I passed the ball to my partner, he Surrounded the goal and passed me back. I did not think two time and I decided to threw the ball at the goal. Finally I scored it, I make a point! We won the final.

It had all finally came to an end. After 10 years of war, they had finally decided that it was time to end the war that was going on just to prove who was the better tribe village. They decided that both tribes would bring their best 11 players to play a Lacrosse game. Which was the most popular game since the 1800s, on the summer of 1860 when the sun started rising. Both tribes had agreed that the winner of the game would be the king of everything. The best player of the Great Lakes was Jonathan a strong and smart player that would do anything to win. The best player that the Atlantic seaboard had was Felix a strong man but small player. The day finally came where they would fight to the end. The game would take place in the eastern woodlands in the united states. It was played with a ball made either of wood or buckshin which was caught with curved rackets with a net on one end. The goal was usually marked with two poles although in some areas only one was used. ”although he was unable to see a game, he claimed that the Indians often play village against village or tribe against tribe. Hundreds of players assemble and the wares and goods offered as prizes often reach a value of a thousand dollars and more” both teams were ready for the game. All the people would see the game as “admired the fine carving of crosses, circles, and stars on the white willow ball and praised Lacrosse as “the finest and greatest” sport of the Indians”. When the game started both teams were giving it their all. You could see that they would make goal after goal. When it came to halftime the great lakes were losing 5 to 3. In the second half, Jonathan was coming in for the great lakes. Jonathan made the game look like it was easy. He change the game when everybody thought it was over he had made goal after goal. They only need one more goal to win it. It was 9 to 7 but the Atlantic Seaboards weren’t going to go down that easy. The great Felix would make two goals and the game was 9 to 9. No one could believe it both teams knew that they had to play smart because if they made one mistake it would be over. The great Jonathan had done it he had made the winning goal for the great lakes. The great lakes were all happy and the Atlantic seaboard people were all sad because they knew things wouldn't be the same. Jonathan had gone up to Felix when he was crying. Jonathan had realized that the Atlantic Seaboards weren’t actually bad people after all. So Jonathan and Felix had talked and agreed on that they would join together to be stronger and better for the people. From that day on they would be known as the Native Americans.
