The Japanese soldiers were everywhere , at every street corner , there were a couple of Japanese standing guard . They just kept a watch on people . If they found somebody , any suspicious -looking people , they would sometimes stop them and ask for their identity . After going around and seeing things for ourselves we thought it's better , safer to stay at home .

Source from:Changi War Museum

Source type:Written

Time period:During JO

Area of research:Daily lives

Inference: This source tells me that the Singaporean teenagers were living in fear and threat .Teenagers would rather stay at home and it would be of low risk to get caught or to even be pull over by them to check his or her identification . And if they were out they had to be alert as Japanese soldiers could be found in each place , every direction.

Evidence:''The Japanese soldiers were everywhere , at every street corner... any suspicious -looking people , they would sometimes stop them and ask for their identity...safer to stay at home ."

One day while attending a matinee show at Queens cinema , i saw Japanese soldiers come in and stand by the doors. They were all well-aarmed I sensed that definitely there was going to be trouble , so i quickly walked off .

The daily lives during syonanto back then was very hard and had intolerable level of hardships for the teenagers. Teenagers were living in pain , threat , fear and could not live in peace . Last time teenagers were malnourished and food deprived they looked like a skeleton and the Japenese did not care but on the other hand life now is different if you are suffering from lack of food or unfed the government would help you even how impecunious you are.Further more the Kempeitai the Japanese military secret police , committed numerous atrocities towards the common people. They introduced the system of "Sook Ching", which means "purge through purification" in Chinese, to get rid of those deemed to be anti-Japanese. Now we only get rid of people who murder and kidnapp so the similar thing is that we still do death sentences.Another similarity is that if the Japanese felt that you were bowing to the Emperor if you were bowing to the guard. So if you didn't bow , you were showing great disrespect towards the Emperor , who was also called Son of Heaven , so basically if you do that you get punished and hammered .Its the same now , as if you offence the President you also get punished and caned. In a nutshell teenagers were so scared to be tortured that they rather stay at home all day.Teenagers just lived in discomfort and in strict guidelines they could not do anything wrong and always had to stay viligant unless you would want to be checked or tortured. After all teenagers lived a terrible life while Japanese showed no mercy.
