My poem, “I Remember That Tomorrow,” revolves around hope. To be more specific, hope when it is not wise to even believe it is there. Marjane Satrapi describes in emotional detail, her struggles during the Iranian Revolution, and what it was like to grow up during and after that time. Specifically during the Islamic Revival. All she wanted was to have her freedom, it did not need to be served to her on a silver platter, but she knew the people deserved it and she loved the revolution.

I start my poem the same way as the book Persepolis starts. This is Marjane Satrapi’s story, the but also the twenty five million other people in Iran before the revolution lived this story too. I have learned through the lens that is Marjane Satrapi’s pen, so I chose to reflect her words in the poem. I repeated the word tomorrow, because I think it is one of the most hopeful words that there is. I started each stanza with a phrase including the word tomorrow. The first stanza is only about Marjane, it shows in a few words her mindset about the current situation in Iran. The second stanza is about the people, what their mindset is, what they are doing to fix it if they are taking part in demonstrations, which takes us to stanza three. Stanza three, four, and five all explained the people’s attempts at what Marjane and most people in the nation wanted. Stanza six takes us back to the beginning, shows how the people’s attempts can succeed IF everyone comes together. Stanza seven shows the real reason for hope. Results. When I reread my poem, the last line feels like closure to me. It feels like a sigh of relief and content.

I chose the background "Phoenix Rising" because I think young Marjane serves as a phoenix rising from the ashes of what the country has descended into under the Shah's rule. I chose the picture of a dove because it symbolizes hope.
