RESILIENCE: Rust Belt Fibershed Student Ambassador Pre-Kickoff Brainstorm by Rust Belt Fibershed

Before we head into our first meeting, let's take a few minutes to put some ideas on the board and let them marinade. This is set up for anonymous posting, but you can feel free to share your name if you'd like. What ideas do you have for a project? Remember the theme of the projects need to be resilience, and what we're working with is something inside the Rust Belt Fibershed mission, which is to develop regional fiber systems that build ecosystem and community health, expand opportunities to implement climate benefitting agriculture, rebuild regional manufacturing, and connect end-users to the source of our fiber and the meaning behind it.... So, what are you thinking? Feel free to comment on each other's ideas!

Retail Pop-Up Shop

I am interested in exploring retail displays/ pop-up shopping experiences. https://www.shopdropdaily.com/ Often times luxury brands will have seasonal pop-ups that are a reflection of the brand as well as the new (temporary) collection. I want to explore how retail displays can be reused and reimagined without having to scrap all of the materials. This way they can be used through multiple seasons but appear new and appealing to their customers as well as reflect their new collections. I think there is a great opportunity to partner with the Rust Belt Fibershed to display some of the products and clothing produced in the area. Or maybe if another student is looking to produce clothing I could collaborate with them to make a small display for their items.

I imagine my project would have physical and digital components. Physically I could make a sample of a retail display. Digitally I can show how it can be multiplied and used in a larger pop-up scenario.

- Mya Agee (4th Year Interior Design Student)

Here there is every one! I’m so excited to get started. I think what I’m most interested in is connecting myself and my peers to the processes that create the fibers that make our fabrics. I’d Like to plan some sort of field trip to visit someone that makes yarns, then bring some back for a make night and reflection, possibly displaying what we make afterwards!

I’m also interested in learning how to work with natural dyes, so another idea would be having a natural dye workshop, or starting some sort of dye garden at Kent

Thinking now I’m also interested in if Kent, OH has a community garden, maybe we could go there? If not, could we start one as a way of both giving back to the community and starting to grow linen, dye, etc?
- Ashlyn

My biggest thought here is that since this is our first year as an ambassador program, we should get the word out to Kent State students, maybe by having a space at the Earth Day events we have here. I think we should do more than one thing too, and I love the dye garden idea too! It's something physical that will be here to stay, which fits in really well with our theme of resilience. Information is key at this early stage! I also think that we should start social media pages (to be used for each group of ambassadors year after year), and maybe we can even make youtube videos with local producers so people in the area can see who, how, and where our resources come from! They could be like mini-documentaries and could be really fun to share.
- Isabelle

I've always loved the idea of a clothing swap but never had a community to do it with. I think it would be cool to host a Panhellenic clothing swap and get all of the sororities involved, and maybe even the frats (I'm a DZ). I would like to add an educational aspect to it because my perception of the community is a lack of knowledge in where. their clothing comes from and the pressure to have a new outfit for every event.
Lily

Hi y’all! A thought I had was to host a mending workshop. I think the art of mending clothing is lost and I would love to help bring it to the Kent community. Mending to me really embodies the concept of resiliency because it is taking a garment that would've otherwise been tossed and making it better than before. For me it is almost seeing how the garment can be given the opportunity of a second life while conserving the original intended use of the garment.

-Isa

Hi!

I am interning with FAANWARE this semester as their knitwear designer and am developing a sweater from CLO3D patterns, prototyping with double bed machines, and programming on STOLL Knitting machines using M1 Plus Software. We want to source the yarn for the sweater using Rustbelt alpacas so we are looking into talking to producers, manufacturers and helping close the loop between alpacas and designers (FAAN). ISO: yarn spun using alpacas currently for retail around 14 gauge. Would love any recs or advice for this endeavor!
