I knew I wanted to address why the US seems to be far behind other places in the world in regards to the number of female leaders in business and government. I wasn't sure about my questions until I saw the Global Issues data base today and I realized I could use that site to focus in on a few particular places now. My main question will be "What societal factors lead to more women in leadership positions in other countries?" Sub-questions "What countries have had high numbers of female leaders over time?" "What are the major societal differences between those countries and the US?"

I am curious about the forms of government in these countries. Are they in power through elections, appointments, or through family connections?

1/30/18 I am now researching, Vivien Thomas, an African American man who developed a heart surgery for infants. He also helped develop the defibrillator. He wasn't given any credit for his discoveries because he wasn't a doctor. He saved money for seven year to go to med school, but it was all lost when the stock market crashed.

The movie "Something the Lord Made" about Vivien Thomas pushed the timeline quite a bit to make it look like it took less time for Vivien to start working directly with Blalock on the medical advances. I get this makes things more dramatic, but leaving other people out of the story or giving them little to no credit is kind of the same thing that happened to Vivien.

I don't have any specifics, but I have seen a lot of posts on Pinterest about inventions that are important and the inventors we never hear about. The stories aren't hard to find if you just go looking. It is disappointing to me that contributions to society are discounted because of who came up with them. I think that people are complacent with just not knowing.

Interview attempt: Dr. Koco Eaton (Vivien's nephew)

Dr. Eaton:

My name is Elizabeth Koch. I am an English teacher at a high school in Kansas City, Missouri. My co-teacher and I have assigned a research project to our students, and we are doing the assignment alongside them. One of the requirements of the assignment is to interview someone in connection to the research topic.

After hearing a piece on BBC Outlook about him, I decided to research the life and contributions of Vivien Thomas. I came across your name in further research, and as we are encouraging our students to reach out as far from Kansas City as they can for interviews, so I am attempting to do the same.

Dr. Eaton, if you are willing and have the time, I would love to ask you a few questions regarding your uncle’s legacy at Johns Hopkins and in the medical field in general. I have become fascinated with the man that he was and would also love any brief personal anecdotes you might want to share.

Thank you for your time,

Elizabeth Koch

Oak Park High School

Special Education Department Chair

elizabeth.koch@nkcschools.org

Office Phone: (816) 321-4987

Cell Phone: (816) 520-5431

Thomas knew his race was an issue for a lot of people and that his pay was often low because of it, but I was surprised to find out that he didn't ever raise too much of a fuss with anyone but Blalock. He expected to be respected by his peers and he expected to be paid, but he didn't want to draw attention to the inconsistency because he wanted to keep his job. He didn't want anyone to have an excuse to make a policy against him or others being there.
