The Nine Muses are the rulers of arts and inspired the creative process. They each have individual names and each have their own rule over the arts, literature, or science. Their names being, Urania, Polyhymnia, Melpomene, Thaila, Cilo, Calliope, Euterpe, Terpsichore, and lastly Erato.

Myth: The Judges of a Music Contest

In this myth, Marsyas a half-animal and half-human challenged the God Apollo, the god of music to a music contest. On their first round the Muses were brought to judge one of their rounds, they both did great. So the Muses choose Marsyas as the victor of the first round. Then on their second round Apollo turned his lyre upside down and played the same tune, but Marsyas couldn't do the same with his flute. The puishment of losing was the winner could do anything to the loser, so he hung him from a pine tree and flayed him alive.
