Make sure you always attend your live meetings! It can really hurt your grade to even miss one meeting. Study for your oral evaluations using duolingo or flash cards. It really helps to repeat the vocabulary and use it more often than just in class.

It was helpful to go over the slides before attending the live conferences or taking the recorded class quizzes. It is also important to make sure you are practicing to get the correct pronunciation for the oral evaluations. You should also ensure you never miss a live conferences as there are many things that is said that is very helpful that you will not be able to get just from the slides. The most important thing is practice, practice, practice.

As silly as it sounds download the app Duolingo if you can. Every night before bed play it for 10-15 minutes. And then when you wake up play it again. Hearing and seeing the language actually being used outside of the classroom is very beneficial.
Also watch Spanish TV with english subtitles. Hearing how fluet speakers use the language will help you in real world situations.

First of all, attend all the live meetings. They are fun and its better to hear the way a word sounds than reading it off of something. Second, if you know someone who can already speak Spanish ask them to practice with you. It helps to practice having a conversation with someone else, also they might be able to teach you some other words.

My advice would be to actually study the hand outs and videos more then once. if you play video games, id recommend changing the language to spanish on ones that you are familiar with. i thought it offered a fun and immersive way read, listen and learn some spanish.

I would say that some of the biggest tips to get through spa 101 is to attend every zoom meeting, missing one can significantly bring your grade down. Do all oral assignments and quizzes, those can help you learn a lot better. And I found using at outside source, like Duolingo, really helpful in picking up spanish quickly. Note taking was my best friend in this class, and I highly suggest doing them. Take notes in class, after class, and even before class. Make sure to review, study, and memorize key words and phrases. Make sure to complete your work early for you can have more time to be able to practice speaking the words. Spanish is hard- all languages are (and msot other things of worth). But, never give up. Even if you don't think you'll use it (you will) give it your all. Speak spanish at home, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Language is the bread and butter of human interaction and culture.

3. Try finding someone else who know Spanish and practice saying sentences with them, pronunciation can be hard so make sure you get some experience! You can even talk to your dog! haha

Hola a todos! Don't take yourself too seriously. Learning a language can make you feel vulnerable, but that's ok. Lean into it, don't feel that you have to be perfect. Make mistakes! If you're making mistakes it means you are trying new things and that's how you'll learn. From a practical standpoint, make sure you practice- work your flashcards, write things down, and I also suggest supplementing with Duolingo. Not only is it extremely helpful, it's pretty entertaining.

The slides help so much to recognize what certain items are called. Even those who speak the language have trouble remembering, pronouncing or even knowing what certain items are called, but the slides made things easier. Also, attending the classes help getting comfortable saying the words out loud and have a better understanding on how future, present and past tense words are used. Spanish 101 was fun and challenging at the same time for me. I HIGHLY recommend studying the google doc slides, taking notes, and attending every live meeting class. I also recommend doing the assignments as soon as you can and to not procrastinate. It's important to engage in the live meetings since this is where you get to practice orally and get further instruction on pronunciation and any questions you might have. Also, it's fun to practice with students on Zoom since they're all supportive, and don't mind when you make mistakes since everyone is learning!

SPA 101 was so much fun, and it is a really great pace too. I started doing Duolingo daily and that REALLY helped because their beginning lessons were aligning pretty well with the class so I definitely recommend checking that out. I had a blast last term taking this class; SPA 101. I found a lot of great study tools that I didn't even know existed. I really enjoyed our Professor Raquel. She was always on point and never made us feel bad even if we did not pronounce the words exactly. She would politely correct us or just move on to another student and ask the same question then come back to the student that had struggled and they would get it right. I looked forward to each and every class. I learned so much and it was really easy because we all worked together even though we were online. In fact I enjoyed the class so much that I am now taking the second part SPA 102! The skills that you learn are an asset for you later in life.

Reviewing SPN 101 and writing out questions as you learn is helpful. Printing out songs in Spanish and learning to sing them is fun. The songs help you learn more casual terminology in Spanish. Duolingo is super helpful for basic and more formal Spanish. Also finding a person to teach Spanish to or a person who knows Spanish that you can converse with is helpful. I think "see one, do one, teach one". It helps build confidence and you both learn with the person and you're teaching Spanish which is amazing.

I honestly had a rough time at the beginning of Spanish 101. Until I started actually practicing words we learned and sentences we would learn daily. I also started using Duolingo which helped a lot learning the basic words that are used a lot in the Spanish language. Practice, practice, practice!!! Anytime you have a chance to practice what you are learning! Take in all the comments that are given after assignments are turned in if you kissed something on the assignment or didn’t do something right on it take it in and do better the next week!! Also Don’t miss the live classes, they are crucial to your learning and understanding I switched onto Spanish 102 late in the first week and missed the first live class and had no idea what I was doing for the first week of assignments and didn’t do the best so don’t miss the love classes or don’t miss anything in this class or else it is hard to understand what is going on Spanish 102 is spoken more in Spanish and less English so you need to understand all the words you learn in 101! Like I said practice, practice, practice!!!!!! And again download any kind of app that will help you learn Spanish!

The best piece of advice I have is to fully take advantage of all of the resources given to you- ignoring videos, apps, and extra content only makes the class harder down the road. I soon realized when taking the class that it was of utmost importance to pay attention to all of the information given to you. It only takes a few minutes every day to practice or listen to a song in Spanish, but it can have big impacts! I personally love using Duolingo and watching cooking videos in Spanish. Raquel also includes really fun Youtube channels with street interviews in Spanish. The more you make it a goal to learn, the more it will come to you.

Spanish 101 was a great course. My advice is to take your time, follow instructions, and do any extra things that you can. When given the oportunity, watch as many videos as you can and take TONS of notes, notes are extremely helpful as you go through the course and still helpful when you get to 102. Take your time when working on assignments, one of the hardest things for me was waiting until Saturday when everything was due and then cramming all of my work into one day and not giving my best effort. Plan out your work days, take notes, and practice. Practice makes perfect, don't worry about messing up, it's apart of the journey. Languages are hard, take it one step at a time and remember to have fun!

Hola! Learning a new language is always a difficult task, it can be both nerve-racking and frustrating. The important thing to remember is that it can also be fun, and if you let go of the fear of failure, it can even be exciting. As when learning any new language, it is important to try your best to fully immerse yourself into what you are learning. Trying to incorporate what you have learned into your everyday life is almost necessary in order to remember it. A fun way I have learned to do this is to put sticky notes around the house with the items names and try to incorporate those words into my language. Or at the very least think about them when completing tasks.

To do well in the class I would recommend taking notes, writing notecards, and using any language app available to you that can help you gain a better understanding of the language. I also think that in order to do well with pronunciation use should watch movies, listen to music, and even try your luck at reading a book in Spanish. Even if you are only able to pick out a few words it can help tremendously with pronunciation and you could learn new words out of it as well. I think my best piece of advice would be to speak with a Spanish speaker if you know anyone and ask them any questions you have or practice with them as hearing someone who is fluent in the language is a tremendous help. Also don’t miss your live classes they help tremendously to understand what you are learning and the different ways to use different words. The most important part of learning the language for me was to actually speak it. So as I took my notes for the week, I would read the vocab aloud repeatedly. It took time, but not as much as I always thought it would going into it. Using SpanishDict was extremely helpful to me as well to learn the conjugation of every verb we learned through the semester. Jotting down simple translations for items or objects around the house is also useful—incorporation of any kind into your daily speaking is helpful.

The toughest part of learning Spanish for me was gaining an understanding of how the language works "backwards" from an english speaker's prospective and then reorganizing it in your head to use the language. For example, "Cruz Roja Americana" in spanish translates to "Cross Red American" in english, however, we would pronounce it "American Red Cross". Same words, but rearranged in the english speaking eye.

Then, gaining an understanding of word "gender", conjugation, and then how to direct it - to you, to me , to him, to them etc.
However, once these parts of the language are practiced enough, it eventually stands out so much it hurts your ears when ya hear it incorrectly. From there, it's learning all the different words, then piecing them into sentences like a puzzle.

The practices that best helped me were
Reading it aloud, hand- writing it on paper, then speaking it aloud again. These paired with the wide variety of videos that Professor Poteet provides. But everyone learns differently, so I encourage to find what resonates best for yourself.

Spanish 101 is fun. engaging and hard class. Don't miss classes spend at least 2 hours a day and stay on top or your work. I did Duolingo to help me get basic words down. Google translate is good tool for pronunciation and only that. I had great time. I wish you the best of luck.

I still can't believe that just last term I was in the same course as you! Even as a trilingual person, Spanish for me was unlike the other languages I speak.

It's amazing that you guys are taking the initiative to learn this globally spoken language!

When I started SPA 101, I was indeed nervous because I was out of practice. However, learning with a group of people in the same boat as me definitely made me much more comfortable.

This class will help you guys started on intonation, pronunciation, vocabulary, and so much more!

I always made sure to remember that the letter 'h' is never pronounced in Spanish unless connected with 'c'. Knowing the "gender" of the words is important to know because the article (a, an, the - un, una, el, la) used depends on words ending with "a" or "o" and sometimes even without.

Practice practice PRACTICE! Spend time each day with the thought of you learning a new language, something many people don't have the privilege of. Think that you're gaining a new skill, a new skill that can get you far in life.

Learning Spanish to me feels like learning a computer programing language. you have to use it to learn it. I need to practice a lot more. try to use what I have learned a make mistakes. unfortunately I learn a lot from making mistakes. Doing the posted assignments will get you thru the class but if you really want to learn the language you have to use it, make mistakes and use it some more. I am using Duolingo, I have watched a few children's stories in Spanish. i am trying to watch Telemundo a little but need to do it more.

Make sure you are always attentive and listening good when you are in your zoom class. If you really listen well and pay attention, the stuff that is being taught will gradually start to make sense. Also, it is quite important to remember when you scheduled your zoom class. Because if you miss even one class, it can hurt your grade super badly. As you go through the weeks, I would also suggest going back to the other stuff you had previously learned, and just review it, to make it stick better in your brain. Good luck!

All I can say is practice and use what you learn to order food communicate with friends. You will be surprised how many Spanish speakers will assist you in learning. Also what helped me out was listening to music in Spanish and ordering in Spanish. Yes it feels awkward which will make it harder but once you get comfortable using the words the easier it gets

I think some of the most important things to remember to be successful in learning Spanish is that knowing a lot of vocab and conjugations are super helpful, but actually conversing in Spanish or watching Spanish TV shows is a great way to learn how native speakers actually use these verbs and vocab terms. Translating something word for word in English can mean something entirely different in Spanish, especially with context! Doing the assignments will allow for good practice with the vocab, attending the live meetings is important for speaking and pronunciation, and watching the extra videos is a great tool for hearing all the things you've learned used in real life.

My suggestion is that it would be best to do the du lingo extra credit for multiple reasons! Also it might be best to take 102 right after 101 but if you need to take a break that might be exactly what you need to gather a new perspective.

My suggestion is to watch the YouTube videos assignments, take notes, and to use flashcards. Those help me, and notes are helpful to refresh your memory for words you may have forgotten. Repetition is very important as well. It's difficult to fit into your schedule, but it's essential if you're going to learn. I also receive a daily email from Juan at Spanish Dictionary, that contains one Spanish word to learn. la cordillera was the word for January 17, 2024.

My suggestion is to look through provided materials like videos, or slides. as well as participate in the online zoom classes and take notes over them. I find looking over the notes also helps me.
