- There is a lot to do w/ money. (In the beginning of text and in the end of text) Ex: 7th paragraph The banker says, "It's a lie. I bet you two millions you wouldn't stick in a cell for even five years."
-11th paragraph "So this wild, ridiculous bet came to pass. The banker, who at the time had too many millions to count, spoiled and capricious, was beside himself w/ rapture."

Careless, the lawyer started drinking the wine alone and smoking even tho at the start he said "I am not gonna drink good wine alone and smoke will ruin the good air in the room".

In "the bet" the lawyer threw away 15 years of his life just for money and few years into his sentence he started to get lonely, depressed and afterwards regretful. "Among the company was a lawyer, a young man about twenty-five years old".  In the story he did stay the 15 years. He would have been 40 years old, all wasted because of money. Just because it was two million rubles he said " I bet I can stay not 5 years but 15". He decided himself to make the stay longer to prove to the banker that he's able to. But in the end he was only gonna do it for the money. 
Strange: "He would write for a long time and tear it up all in the morning". To me I find that strange because why would he spend a long time writing to tear it up in the morning. And "More then once he was heard to weep" Maybe he's weeping because he's regretting the bet and wishing he had not done it. But what I find strange is that he still decides to stay there even if he got the choice to leave. 
Imagination: Even tho he was in a cell at the end of the story he said " In your books I've climbed mountains like Mont Clar and Elbruz, In the books I've drank fragrant wines, sang songs and hunted wild deer and wild boar." -In the beginning of the story we hear a lot of talk about capital punishment and life-imprisonment. Is capital punishment better? Or is life-imprisonment better? Who is really to decide. What if none are the better choice.
Ex: "It's better to live somehow than not to live at all." 

-The morals of the banker and lawyer tie in with the other themes because if it wasn't for this right-or-wrong discussion, they wouldn't have made the bet that they did.

-I believe that the lawyer is in a state of omniscience due to all of the books that he has read. When he started his stay in prison, he had not been reading many books, and those that he did read weren't necessarily important at the time.
