What about a split day? For example: 5/6 in person in the AM and virtual in the PM. Teachers could schedule large/small/individual zoom meetings in the PM. 7/8 could be virtual in the AM and in person in the PM. This puts fewer kids in the building, opens up more spaces to be used, and makes outdoor spaces more available. Lunch for AM kids could go home as a sack lunch, for PM kids they could eat when they first arrive while learning spaces are cleaned. I don't know how this works for specials--maybe one day a week in person for specials?
Reducing numbers in the building also helps with numbers on entrance and exit of the building
A hybrid approach would at least provide scheduling consistency for parents and give us flexibility to move quickly between fully virtual if needed and fully in person when ready.

I think when someone tests positive that is going to be a game changer. We already have sub shortages and I'm guessing many of our older subs are not keen on the idea of subbing during a pandemic and I don't blame them. Keeping kids in a strict co-hort daily would help with contact tracing within the school to identify who would need to be tested/self-quarantine

Cohorts could be our homeroom groups. Students could use time in their group to access online learning from all of their teachers. This might allow us to give students time to move freely through work at their own pace while having adult guidance there. If this approach was combined with a hybrid model kids could get virtual 1:1 help during another part of the day with content teachers as needed

I'm wondering about an every other week model. By that I mean that we have two groups of students and they alternate weeks between coming to school and remote learning. It would allow parents the chance to schedule their weeks. During their week of at-school learning, students would be in smaller class sizes and could either pass together or have teachers pass to classrooms. During their week of remote learning, they are working on the things they learned and the assignments given during their week at school.

Great thoughts and ideas from everyone.
If all 7th grade students eat lunch together, and are allowed in the 7th grade gather space at passing time, what happens when one person tests positive? Every student, teacher, aide, custodian, bus driver, etc., who interacted with that student, as well as the family members of those people, will be effected. How can we minimize the number of interactions students have? Is it possible to keep students in a Homeroom each school day, with the Homeroom teacher coaching students and presenting and helping with online content from other teachers? Maybe for students school is 1/2 day every other day, with afternoons set aside for office hours (time to get one-on-one online help from teachers). Every other day would reduce the numbers on the buses as well. When one is effected, all are effected, and that effects the whole system. Smaller cohorts mean less burden on the whole system. I don’t know how practical this is, but it might help maintain in-person interactions (and be a way to get to know and build relationships with a small group of students). As someone commented, some of our subs are at high risk for Covid. At this time, it would be hard for anyone to accept a sub job in which they interacted with 120 students each day. Would subs be more likely to accept jobs if they interacted with 15-20 students per day?
