Fast fashion was developed from a product driven concept based on a manufacturing model often referred to as “quick response.” This was developed in the U.S. in the 1980s and was moved to a market-based model of “fast fashion” in the late 1990s and the early 21st century. Throughout the years people have been invested in the different styles of fashion. We have created clothing that is big, small, large, medium, but all of the centuries worth of clothing has one thing in common, the people. People have been making clothing for generations, from the Victorian era with the Victorian bustle and a dramatic train, to the early 1800s with its small bodices and straight skirts. Even in the 1800s we were making clothing at an ever fastening rate, from small bodices and straight skirts, to corsets and enormous skirts with a metal cage. For so many years we have created clothing that is ever changing and has a steady pace in fashion, this however is coming back to bite us in the butt. Fast fashion was brought into question around 2013 when the Rana Plaza clothing manufacturing complex in Bangladesh collapsed, killing over 1,000 workers. This was a reality check of sorts for most people, causing them to question the real cost of a 6 dollar top. Fast fashion has an impact on many things ranging from the smallest ant to well the entire world. Most of the clothing we don't buy ends up in landfills or just thrown away and the people who make our clothing aren't working in great or even good conditions. In this day and age we should be able to do something about all this, fix it and make it better. The most known face is the face of the clothing in the store, but there are other sides to these items. The people who make clothing items work in very poor conditions, working long hour shifts and earning very little money in return. Their supervisors give them little right and they don't have many chances to have a say in things. Theses things often lead to power and sexual abuse from employers. Clothes in fast fashion are made quickly and cheaply, people don't often question the real price of a five dollar shirt. Workers in this industry are not only abused physically but mentally to. When working long hours with very little breaks people start to get sleep deprived and tired, affecting their mental state. Being power or sexually abused by someone you see on a daily basis can make you terrified to do simple day to day tasks. Studies also show that fast fashion can affect people's mental health negatively, thus triggering mental health conditions such as psychological stress from impulse buying and panic buying, feeling insecure, shame, inadequacy, guilt, and anxiety in consumers. Most of the clothing that gets made doesn't actually get sold. Fashion is an ever changing industry that changes rapidly and differently. Fast fashion has cheap and in style items that most people can afford, but what happens when in style clothes go out of style? Most of them get put in landfills and are a leading cause of climate change. Producing clothes uses up a lot of natural resources and creates greenhouse gas emotions. Greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for climate change and the fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions, more than the aviation and shipping combined. The main cause of the fashion industry's impact is the use of raw materials. Cotton alone uses about 2.5% of the world's farmlands and synthetic materials, like polyester, require an estimated amount of 342 million barrels of oil every year. Not only synthetic materials use large amounts of oil, the process of dying clothes requires 43 million tonnes of chemicals a year. These things also require large amounts of water. Making a t-shirt takes 2,700 liters of water, 10,000 liters to make a pair of jeans and 600 to make a pair of socks. In sweatshops the employers have power over the workers and the workers don't have rights. They work hard on little wages and don't have a say in how things work, causing sweatshops to be the same as modern day slavery. This is a political topic because in the thirteenth amendment it states that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” This statement therefore contradicts any form of slavery in the United States or with a country they work with. Still we do business with countries and businesses that use sweatshops to manufacture their products. It affects climate change, pollution, modern day slavery, people's lives and mental well beings. Fast fashion is an issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible. In the last few years alone people have been consuming fast fashion at an alarming rate never seen before on the planet, with 100 billion garments made per year. In Europe they have been discussing making a rule to try to stop climate change in its tracks. It is meant to help cut back on the effects of fast fashion, these rules will make fast fashion more sustainable than it was before.
