Experiences

When thinking of my personal experiences involving participatory music making I think of when I was in choir. In choir we participated as a class and everyone present participated in making the music. An obvious example of a participatory experience is karaoke, this activity is a great way to focus one's primary attention to singing and on doing the activity. Turino describes this activity as a , "participatory tradition stripped down to the barest essential.."(Turino,51) I used to sing a lot of karaoke when I was younger and it was such a simple way to get involved in music . I enjoyed participating in the activity because of how fun and natural it was.

As for Presentational, the obvious example would be a concert. Text from the book describes presentational as, "music prepared by musicians for others to listen to." (Turino,52) In other words, the artist is on stage and the audience is watching the artist. Although the audience is participating and singing or dancing along with the artist, everyone who is present is listening and only the artist has musical abilities.

When it comes to what I value most about participatory music making it is that everyone present can participate in making music and that there is a wide range of musical abilities that can participate, meaning anyone can.

In a presentational music making atmosphere I value the way the artists perform for the audience, the book says, "musicians must provide a performance that sustains the interest of an audience..." (Turino,52)
I think it is a very special experience and always involves the connection channeling from the performer to the audience.

I believe my experiences line up similarly to what we have learned these past few weeks. I know by drawing in my experiences with the information we have been learning I was able to understand the material more as well.

When I was around 6 or 7 Hannah Montana was THE THING. I would always put in this in my families karaoke machine and sing my heart out. I sang along with her songs so much, I would not be surprised if I still knew the words to some of the songs. Thinking back to how much fun I had with this, makes me laugh and also makes me want to sing karaoke again.

Hilary Duff Karaoke

I decided to include a popualr son that some of us might know, especially if we watched Disney Channel. Hilary Duff had a good album made for Karaoke. I remeber puttin this song on in particular when I chose to sing with my karaoke machine. Now that I think about it, I never stopped singing as a kid and I must of been very annoying. To my defense I really wanted to be a pop star. However, I do remember loving this song and I also had a whole dance rountine to match.

When I think of Karaoke I think of James Corden and his show. Every couple of weeks he has artists get into the passenger seat and sings with them. I love this show especially when there is a new Carpool Karaoke on it. The way the artist as free range on what they sing and how their perfomance is allowed to be more organic is very cool.

I love using concerts as an example of presentational music-making because I attend concerts all the time. I absolutly love them because the artist is right in front of you or if I am in the nosebleed section I just say at least the artist is in the same room with me. The experince of a concert is very special and memorable for me as well.

I really like gifs, so I thought I would insert one of some one participating in a music activity as a way to show participatory. I came across this one and thought it was very cute. I am sure that is what I looked like when I did my Karaoke preformances as a kid.
