There are two pouches and four coins on the left side, and twelve coins on the right.  So the equation would look like this:
2x + 4 = 12.
You'd start by subtracting 4 from both sides (or crossing off four coins on each side), and then your equation would look like this:
2x = 8.
Then, you would divide both sides by two, leaving one pouch on the left, and four coins on the right.  There are four coins in each pouch.
