Revenge that is not acted upon leads to more destruction than action. This is seen by the fact that throughout the play Hamlet is very indecisive of whether or not he should kill Claudius. This ultimately leads to him killing Polonius and thereby incurring Laertes' wrath. Laertes, on the other hand, is very willing to take his revenge on Hamlet. Though the subsequent duel leads to the death of the royal family, these deaths would not have occurred had Hamlet acted upon his initial plans earlier in the play.

Throughout the play, Hamlet struggles with many decisions. He often questions whether or not life is worth living. This is shown through his "to be or not to be" soliloquy. He also has trouble deciding how he will get revenge on Claudius for killing his father. Fortinbras also showed a strong amount of decisiveness. He saw a piece of land he wanted and immediately decided he would have it. He has many men go out to fight for the land, while Hamlet was at the castle still deciding whether or not to kill Claudius and how he would do it.

Each introduction of death and mortality led to the revelation that death is coming faster than expected. These examples include the ghost appearance, the gravedigger's actions, Ophelia's funeral, and other murders. Mortality and death often come as a surprise and don't always stick to the stereotypical life cycle.

In order to prove their masculinity, men tend to go to extreme lengths. Hamlet battles Laertes in order to show he is not afraid of him, and keep his self image strong.
Another example is when Claudius tries to protect the secret of using a cowardly way to kill the king.
A women is expect to have a man in their life to "guide" them.Gertrude remarries quickly in order to "complete" herself. She finds a replacement for her dead husband in order to avoid dreadful mourning and sorrow.

Religion plays a role in all of Hamlet's actions. WHen he came close to killikng Claudius, he stopped because Claudius was praying and he believed the killing him while praying would send him straight to heaven. There is also this idea of the afterlife and living after physical death shown throw Hamlet Sr.'s ghost and how he was stuck in purgatory because of his sins.

Madness

Madness can be seen throughout the play in the embodiment of different characters such as Hamlet and Ophelia. Most of this madness is brought on by grief by the death of a loved one. It is also shown in Claudius after seeing the play which portrays the murder of his brother. This acts an important role in the play Hamlet, because the madness helped to create the events such as Ophelia's death which spurred Laertes into a maddened rage to fight Hamlet, which is how he dies. The madness also very quickly led to the murder of Claudius. The theme that this represents is that with madness comes downfall.
