Lewis Hines exposed child labor in factories. Upton Sinclair wrote a book titled "The Jungle" this book exposed everything that these people did in meat packing factories. This allowed the Meat Inspection Act to be passed. Thomas Nast exposed the people in power such as Boss Tweed who stole millions of dollars from peoples tax money. Lastly Jacob Riis exposed the problem in tenements. Many people mostly immigrants had no place to live and would end up living in tenements. This problem led people to get diseases and many problems with being tightly packed into a room.

For example, there were no safety precautions in factories, businesses forming monopolies and even child labor. Muckrakers such as Thomas Nast, Upton Sinclair, Lewis Hines, and Jacob Riis tried to prevent these problems from continuing to happen by bringing them up to the surface for everyone to see. Some took pictures, wrote books, and drew political cartoons. The reason muckrakers did this was to hopefully create change and to reform. These problems occurred due to rapid industrialization and many people moving to cities.

Also in the word progressive is progress this shows it helped the people. Tenement were really small dark "apartments" that were really unsafe that many family's had to share.

The Progressive Era was a period from the late 18 hundreds to the early 19 hundreds. This was a time of industrialization, it is nicknamed the Gilded Age, covered in gold. Of course, with every good comes a bad. In factories came most of the problems like them being unsanitary, child labor, and low wages. Muckrakers were people who looked to expose these problems. Some muckrakers were Ida Tarbell, Jacob Riis, Lewis Hines, Teddy Roosevelt, and Thomas Nast. They all were either cartoonists, novelists, or photographers who used their skills to expose large scale businesses. Some laws that came out of this Era were the 18-21 Amendment. The 18th banned alcohol, the 19th gave women suffrage, and the 21st making alcohol legal again.

The Progressive Era was 1890-1920 where people especially muckrakers wanted to change or reform the nation. Some problems were sanitation, living conditions, crime, and factory conditions. Muckrakers made things like novels, political cartoons, pictures and newspapers to fix these problems. Thomas Nast made nasty political cartoons about the corrupt government leader Boss Tweed who was stealing money from taxpayers. Upton Sinclair wrote a book called "The Jungle" to fix the problems in meat factories. Lewis Hines took pictures of kids working in factories. Jacob Riis tried to fix the problems within the tenements.

The Progressive Era took place in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The entire union was making progress to reform the union by making new laws. The muckrakers were the ones who exposed the problems such as sanitation, safety, and child labor. These muckrakers would create cartoons, write books, and take pictures. For example, Upton Sinclair saw the problems within the Meat Packing Industry and wrote a book called The Jungle. Factories had unsafe working environment, child labor, low wages, and long hours. When the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire occurred, it really brought attention to the safety of workers. Later, Robber Barons started to get expose by muckrakers such as Thomas Nast who exposed Boss Tweed. As the muckrakers kept exposing these problems, it caught the governments attention and they later made laws to reform the union.

The Progressive Era highlighted many problems that occurred in New York cities. Some problems include child labor, public safety, factory conditions, sanitation, the tenements that the family were living inside, and more. One key detail that is touched a lot upon are the Robber Barons. The Robber Barons exploited certain monopolies in order to take power and earn money, no matter how many lives are at risk or are lost. In order to stop these Robber Barons, a new form of spreading the news was created. "Muckrakers", which literally means they're raking the muck, helped tell the stories and horrors the Robber Barons were created. Muckrakers created comics, books, newspapers, and other ways of illustration to expose these problems. The goal of this effort was to catch the eyes of the government and create new laws, essentially reforming cities.

During the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s),there were many problems. For example, Child Labor, horrible tenements, unsafe working conditions, and monopolies. Muckrakers such as Upton Sinclair, Lewis Hines, Jacob Riis, Thomas Nast, and Ida Tarbell exposed these problems to the public. They hoped the government would see and make changes. (Reform)Change is making new laws. The Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act were created thanks to Upton Sinclair exposing it. During this time, amendments were also created.
