Bodies are usually cremated within 24 hours of death

• while waiting to be cremated, the body must remain at home (if possible) so family and friends can come to pay their respects

Cremating the body --> quickest way to release the soul

• Belief that body itself serves no purpose 

Historically Hindus would cremate their loved ones on the Ganges River in India and scatter their ashes in the water

Hindu faith is centered around reincarnation

In addition to chants and mantras: various Hindu death rituals are performed

• Body washed with
  • ghee
  • honey
  • milk
  • yoghurt
• Palms are places in a praying position
• Essentail oils placed on their head
  • females --> turmeric
  • males --> sandalwood
• Body is wrapped in a white sheet 
• A garland of flowers and pinda (rice balls) placed around deceased

After death rituals, the MukhAgni ceremony (cremation ceremony) is held at a crematorium 

• Casket is carried in feet first meanwhile mourners recite Hindu prayers
• Mourners respectfully view the body in the open casket
• After cremation --> ashes are spread over: 
  • a place of importance to the deceased, or a body of water
• The MukhAgni ceremony is traditionally very short 
  • 30 minutes (depending on the family)

What did you learn about this particular culture from their beliefs about death and the afterlife?  

• I learned that Hindus have a more optimistic perception of death, knowing that their loved one's souls are eternal. I also learned that unlike other religions like Judaism or Christianity where burials are more common, Hindus always cremate the bodies of their loved ones to release their souls.

What did you find most interesting?

• I found the funeral rites of Hinduism the most interesting. Specifically the fact that as soon as possible after death, people are washed with ghee, honey, milk, and yogurt. The logistics of this are slightly confusing to me, but nevertheless very interesting because it is so different from my religion.

How does this compare to your own beliefs/ideas?

• This compares to my own Catholic beliefs, because of the parallels of karma to heaven and hell. Hindus believe that the way you behave during your life will determine how you are reincarnated. Similarly, I believe that the way you act during your life will affect whether you enter heaven or hell. Both of these religions deal with intentional actions that affect what happens to you after death.
