The main focus of ESL is the continuation of teaching English to non-native speakers in a main solely English speaking environment.The structure of the class is to immerse the class in the English language, while allowing them the acquire the skills they would need to succeed if they were integrated in an English only setting. Each ESL program can be structures differently depending on the students needs. There are essentially different levels to the program depending on the proficiency of each student.

Characteristics of the ESL program:

Cultural Awareness-the goal is to integrate and immerse the student in the English language and culture.
Immerse in English- to make it extensive, challenging and rewarding. The goal is to make English the priority.
Diversity- the classroom is designed to be diverse as everyone in the program is striving to learn the culture and the language. Everyone from every background coming together to put in that time, effort and work.
Adaptability- to make the students comfortable and know they have the ability to adapt. To make that transition more smoothly as well as gear them to be able to do so on their own.
Communication- the goal is to communicate in every aspect. To make sure that what is being communicated is retained and used. To be able to communicate and break that barrier between the native language and English.

Building Relationships-it is important to build relationships with not only the families but the parents as well. Building a stable relationship is always important and an essential key to a child’s learning. When they have not only your support but their parents/ families it makes all the difference as it means that everyone in their life cares about their success, goals and accomplishments.
Communication- good communication is essential to any relationship as it fosters an ongoing channel between both parties. The need to know and the want to help is always there. It is important to know how to communicate as well as be able to do it efficiently and effectively to ensure that the help needed is relayed.Making sure there is transparency and that everything is told how it is and how it can be resolved.
Providing Resources- it is important to make sure that the students and well as the parents have all the resources to succeed as well as support both parents and students.
