The Border Ruffians threatened to shoot, burn and hang those who opposed slavery. Their candidate was elected to congress. When it came time to elect, almost 5,000 men came into the state from Missouri to illegally vote in the election. The result of the election being 36 pro and 3 anti slavery making Kansas a slave state.

Anti slavery residents of Kansas drew up a free state constitution and elected a separate governor and state legislature located in Topeka, Kansas. The result was a state with two governments.

Vengeance would come on that night just three days after the sacking of Lawrence. Brown and 7 others entered the pro slavery town of Pottawatomie Creek. Armed with weapons, they went into the enemies house, dragged them out and hacked at their head with swords until death.
