Incude your name and hour. Then post your response: Post an analysis of one character in chapters 5 or 6 (Okonkwo, Ekwifi, Enzima, Chielo, or Okafo). Introduce the character and underlying motivations. Then cite evidence and explain how that evidence reveals the motivation.

In chapter four, Okonkwo demonstrates his motivation to be a man and his fear of being like his father. As Okonkwo's accomplishments are described, Achebe writes, "Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To show affection was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength" (28). This excerpt from the text shows how he is afraid to show emotion in order not to feel weak and to feel like a man. At a deeper level, Okonkwo is trying to avoid becoming like his father.

In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is motivated to work on his farm rather than sit around and be lazy. As his family prepares for the Yam feast, Achebe writes, "But somehow Okonkwo could never become as enthusiastic over feasts as most people[...]But he was always uncomfortable sitting around for days waiting for a feast or getting over it. He would be very much happier working on his farm" (35). This shows how he doesn't care for feasts and would rather be working on his farm and being productive.

In "Things fall apart" by China Achebe, the character Ekwifi is shown as a very strong woman because she fought for her own life. In the story it says "Ekwefi was a woman of forty-five who suffered a great deal in her life"(40). Including she had a great passion for wrestling and she couldn't do that with her husband so went with Okonkwo. in the story it says "a few years later she ran away from her husband and came to live with Okonkwo" (40). This demonstrates that she has loves and has a great passion for wrestling.

According to the text on page 44, she smashed her pot by swaying her waist like an adult. She began to laugh as her pot cracked, but she started crying as she approached her house. The novel, Things Fall Apart states, " But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father"(13). Because he doesn't want to be like his father, he instead shows more anger than gentleness, more strength so as not to show weakness, and more work so he can feed all his family unlike his father ever did.

For example, on page 50 the text says " Okafo was swept off his feet by his supporters and carried home shoulder high they dang his praise and the young women clapped their hands" (50). This example shows how the honor and fame and the women would motivated Okafo.

]Okonkwo, the main character of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe's is a very strong-minded person driven by a big fear of failure and weakness due to his father/childhood. This fear is caused by his father Unoka, a lazy and irresponsible man, who motivates Okonkwo's big goal of strength, and success: "Okonkwo's prosperity was visible in his household. He had a large compound enclosed by a thick wall of earth" This quote shows that even though he grew up poor he overcame that and made it even better and now had a huge house property unlike before and he's proud.

And he also is very violent with his own daughter "Sit like a women" Okonkwo shouted at her" p44. So that is some proof from chapter 4 of Okonkwo being violent towards his own daughter.

In "Things Fall Apart" in chapter five, we were introduced Obiageli. We learn that she can be a bit emotional, especially how she shows her feelings toward her family. She's motivated to prove herself to her parents, specifically her father, that she's grown even for her age. In the story, she had dropped her pot and had first laughed about it then began to cry as she came up to the house. The story states "You are older than Obiageli but she has more sense." (45) This was after she corrected her father about not eating and talking at the same time. These are only a few examples where Obiageli tries to act older than she is.

Her main motivation is wrestling contests, and her fear is making Okonkwo angry since he tends to get physically abusive when angry. Ekwifi fear is described in the book, "Okonkwo's second wife had merely cut a few leaves off it to wrap some food, and she said so. Without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping" (38).

In Chapters 5 and 6 of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo’s character is shown to be driven by his fear of being weak, which is tied to his hatred of his father, Unoka. Unoka was poor, didn’t provide for his family, and was seen as weak and lazy by the people in their village. Because of this, Okonkwo is determined to be the complete opposite of his father. He wants to be strong, successful, and respected by others. Throughout the story, Okonkwo works hard to gain power and achieve greatness so that he is never seen as weak, just like his father. He also feels that he has to prove his masculinity at all costs, which means being tough, showing control, and always being the strongest in every situation. This need for strength and respect drives many of his actions, especially in these chapters. Okonkwo’s fear of weakness and his obsession with success show how much he wants to protect his reputation and legacy in the village.

In Chapter 6, Okonkwo shows his fear of weakness by being harsh with his wife, Ekwifi, during the New Year's yam festival. When she takes some leave from the house, Okonkwo gets angry and strikes her. This shows how he thinks being strict is the only way not to show weakness. Okonkwo's actions reflect his fear of failure and his need to always show strength, even in small moments with his family.2

This shows that he will be the next up in coming great or atleast try and be but first he will need to win the people first to gain respect. His wrestling skills where so good it brought the most attention to the people as both wrestlers did not give up. it was so such a close battle the refs where already closing in to break it up until it says" Okafo raised his right leg up and swung it over his rivals head and swept him off his feet". She was a very curious child who would ask her mother many questions, as seen in the test on page 40, when she asked, "Is it true that when people are grown up, fire does not burn then?" Being a child Ezinma does not understand much of the world yet so she depends on her mother. In the end, Ezinma's motivation was to be like her mother.

In chapter 5, Obiageli drops a pot that meant dearly to her mother. In the text it states "That is very true. Do you hear that, Ezinma? You are older than Obiageli but she has more sense."(27) This shows that Obiageli's family thinks very highly of her and expects more from her, so when Obiageli dropped the pot she began weeping because that pot meant dearly to her mother. This then became a motivation since the family of Obiageli depends on her so much.

In "Things Fall Apart," Enzima is motivated by her mother. In chapter five Enzima asks her mother why when moms are cooking they don't get burned by the pot or the food. She also asked her mom why her eyelid was twitching, and her mother said that means she was going to see something soon(25). This shows that even when she was younger she was always interested in learning new things.

In Chapter 5 of 'Things Fall Apart', Okonkwo shows his motivation to not have his family go hungry and poor, he thought his wife had killed his banana tree but she had only took leaves to wrap food. Also he needs for his yams to grow healthy so he could sell them. Chinua Achebe show this by writing " Who killed this banana tree?" he asked. Who killed this tree? Or are you all deaf and dumb?" As a matter of fact the tree was still alive. His second wife had merely cut a few leaves off tho wrap food." This quote shows that Okonkwo will get very mad if his produce dies.

Ezinma was very wise for a 10-year-old girl. As said on page 40, " Her daughter was only ten years old but she was wiser than her years." This means she wants to be wise like her mom when she's older.

The author of Things Fall Apart, China Achebe, portrays a contradictory character named Okonkwo. Okonkwo's motivation throughout the first couple of chapters is quite apparent: to not be like his father, Unoka. This internalized insecurity has affected Okonkwo many times. One example is, "Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak." (61) This plays into his contradicting personality because he truly cared for Ikemefuna, but his overwhelming fear of becoming seen as weak like his father made him feel like he had to kill him.
