Saul was converted to Paul after his baptism. This name change indicated his ‘turn around’ from persecuting Jesus to preaching Jesus. He had been chosen by God to be instrumental in spreading the word of the gospel, which he did after his conversion, reaching far away places. He spoke with Kings, rulers, Jewish and roman leaders, teaching that god loves us and sin is forgiven. He wrote his instructions down from God clearly so both Christians and non-Christians could understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. These instructions are now present in the New Testament, the Acts of the Apostles tells ‘the founding of the Christian church and the spread of the message to the Roman empire.

After Paul’s 1st missionary, where he set up the churches, he then returned home to plan his 2nd journey with Barnabas. But after a disagreement, Paul ended up starting this with Silas, 49-52AD, where he continued to strengthen the believers and churches with the gospel. The first stops were Derbe and Lystra, where they met Timothy who joined them on the journey travelling through many countries. In the city of Troas, Paul had a vision in the night calling him, ‘travel to Damascus to preach the gospel’. The people of Damascus did not welcome Paul, but he continued to settle churches in Philippi and Thessalonica. In another vision he was called to Macedonia. There he cast a demon out of a young girl, however this attracted unhappy crowds who had him imprisoned but an angel set him free, and the jailer was saved. They travelled on through Greece, Jerusalem and eventually returned to Antioch, throughout his journey he continued teachings of the gospel and people started to convert. He approached the Jews to reason with them, this was a culture he knew well as he was previously a Jew. He also met and discussed with Greek philosophers the word of the gospel leading to their conversion. During this missionary he wrote the 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, the 1st to urge the people of Thessalonica through persecution and the 2nd was to be concerned that the 2nd coming of Christ had been missed.

The main reason of Paul’s letters was to spread God’s word and to encourage the Christian communities to keep going and grow bigger. He sent these to the gentiles, the Romans and the Hebrews to spread the gospel. The main messages of his letters were mainly the death, resurrection and lordship of Jesus Christ. However, all his letters had a different hidden meaning inside them. In his letter to the Galatians, he wrote that "the Gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ." 1:11-12. This message shows us that Paul had been selected by Christ to deliver his message to the people and that it was not a man’s gospel, he was not passing on religious teaching picked from other people.

Paul was born a Jew, Diaspora sect, and ‘taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers’. His upbringing taught him that Jews were the chosen people, following a strong set of rules, who had a direct relationship with God. This became a cultural challenge for Paul as his newfound beliefs taught him that faith and love for one another were more valuable than living by Jewish laws and expectations. This is shown in his epistles “6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love”.

Galatians 3:1-14 can tell us today that laws do not constrict us, they do not tell us how to live our lives. Laws aren’t based on faith and Christ redeemed us from the ‘curse’ so that we could live by spirit. You were believed to be cursed if you chose to rely on laws, Paul wrote to the Galatians asking what had happened and if they had been bewitched. It is important to understand, today, that you shouldn’t rely on laws and let them control you as it is your choice on how you place your trust and faith. It asks us if we are true followers of Christ and if we know what Christ did for us on the cross.
