Environment studies had been introduced in the primary stage, following the recommendation of NCF 1975. EVS is a combination of science and social science and environmental science. It is an example of integrated curriculum where different subjects are brought under a single roof, wiping out the the watertight boundaries. It is often done not by focusing on concepts but on questions about the world around. Concepts from various subjects are drawn to address these questions, making integration possible.

NCF 2005 has presented some objectives for strengthening the integrated approach of environmental studies which shows how science and social sciences should be taught so that children can be able to build a bridge or connection between the natural, cultural and social world. This will make them more thoughtful and develop certain skills like creativity, curiosity and cognitive capacity.

To achieve the integration of EVS, different specialists from different disciplines of science and social sciences tried to see what topics should be included in EVS syllabus. If we see their ideas that this will create a complexity in the integration of Evs, as different disciplines will have different topics and they will lack that interconnection between the subjects and also not related to the child’s own real world and experiences, which will result in creating a loophole in the integration of science and social sciences. So, instead of topics, some specific “themes” are suggested to be taught in EVS so that integration can be made possible. The given syllabus also tries to follow the same approach but at the same time it argues that it does not claim to provide full satisfactory result in integration of subjects.

The syllabus for teaching Environmental Studies at the elementary level is commendable for its integrated approach, drawing from various disciplines to provide students with a holistic understanding of the world. By incorporating themes that resonate with children's experiences and encouraging hands-on learning, it facilitates active engagement and deepens comprehension. I appreciate how it progresses over three years, gradually broadening students' perspectives from self-awareness to societal contexts, fostering empathy and critical thinking along the way. Moreover, the emphasis on sensory experiences and social interactions aligns well with contemporary educational principles, promoting experiential learning and collaborative exploration. Overall, it presents a comprehensive framework for interdisciplinary education and meaningful learning experiences.

The NCF 2005 promotes an Inegrated approach where science and social science combined as environmental science to give holistic understanding of environmental issues for students. Students will get a deeper understanding of the topics. This approach aims to build skills like creativity, curiosity and application of knowledge across multiple domains, empowering students to analyze issues from diverse perspectives and to give innovative solutions. Students with this approach can become thoughtful individuals to address environmental issues.

There will be subject specific knowledge and skills in subject-based curriculum, which develops specialized knowledge in that subject. Every subject will be taught separately with distinct objectives. I went through the History curriculum, where themes are developed to give depth and breadth information to develop a greater understanding of topics in that subject.

1. Subject-based curriculum:

In a subject-based curriculum, the content is organized around different subjects such as mathematics, science, arts, social studies, etc. In this, each subject is taught separately. The curriculum generally follows a linear progression. In this, every subject area is studied in depth.

2. Integrated Curriculum:

An integrated curriculum is designed by combining content and instruction from multiple subject areas. Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, subjects are explored through a multidisciplinary lens, providing students with opportunities to make connections between different areas of knowledge.

While subject-based curriculum organizes content around individual subjects, integrated curriculum integrates content from multiple subjects to create a more holistic and interconnected learning experience.
