For me, the most meaningful competency standard was 12.1. I have developed an understanding of my own culture, beliefs and biases that I feel now will help me during my practice as a nurse. I have learned the importance of respecting and maintaining an awareness of another person's culture and being mindful that each person has gone through different experiences and has unique circumstances. I hope to gain knowledge about different cultures and beliefs in my care as a nurse and to build trust with the families and patients I work with. This I feel is very important to ensure I provide culturally competent care in the workplace.

Country focus: Sudan Africa
Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Located in the Sahara desert, it lacks natural resources such as fresh water and food resulting in poor health. More than 20 million people across Sudan are suffering from acute food insecurity as a result of conflict, economic decline, and mass displacement.

The three common health concerns found on the Australian refugee health practice guide likely to be presented when arriving from Sudan Africa are Tuberculosis, malaria, and mental health issues.

Tuberculosis: is a disease that affects a person's lungs caused by Mycobacterium. TB disease is curable. It is treated by a standard 6-month course of 4 antibiotics. Common drugs include rifampicin and isoniazid.

Malaria: Malaria is a disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. It causes an infection of the red blood cells that can sometimes be fatal if left untreated. Malaria can be treated orally with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). (Refugee health guide, 2023)

Mental health: 48.7% of refugees internationally experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
