The first podcast I listened to was Dr. Margo Gottlieb. I really appreciated her stating that assessment is an important piece, but it is not the sole indicator of what students are capable of and how we need to shift that mentality so students can demonstrate their learning in multi-modalities. I think the majority of us can agree that testing is useful in some areas, but it should not be the determining factor, especially for our EL students. The second podcast I listened to was Dr. Diep Nguyen. There was one piece she stated about one of her teachers referring to her native language as knowledge. That is something I would like to implement into my classroom, changing the vocabulary of language to knowledge. One area that reflected both podcasts was how they were talking about doing a math problem and how it took one of them a really long time to complete the problem, even though they had done that math years prior, it was just because of the language. This correlates to how assessments need to be on more of a multicultural lens. One more big takeaway I had from Dr. Diep Nguyen’s podcast was her reflection when things became frustrating. One of the resources stated that many EL students are in elementary school. I found it interesting that ELA scores have the largest gap in the 3rd grade but then it narrows by 9th grade. I wonder if this has to do with it being the first year of big standardized testing for 3rd graders as well. The math gap closes throughout elementary school, although it increases again in highschool. I am curious as to why that is. Colorado made a goal for 2022, to reach 71% of EL students making the expected amount of progress needed. My take-away was that, as we all know, teaching is about relationships. The same is true for teaching a multi-lingual learner. One must know a student's history pertaining to language. We can not make assumptions that an EL student needs A, B, C, but instead we must understand the history of the student to understand the entry-point for English, as it is often much more complicated, personal, and nuanced than one may assume. For instance, Dr. Nguyen spoke Vietnamese, but went to a French school. I think it was 57% for all EL students, and higher for LEP students (67%).  This was compared to 43% for all students. I would like to dig futher into this data and the identification process for these students.

If students are able to have access to their home language, either through support in a bilingual discussion group, or from translated resources then they are able to more accurately show what they know.  When students are supported in these ways, they also feel more confident and are more likely to be engaged in classroom activities. 

She also spoke to the importance of teaching writing and vocabulary with intention.

My biggest take away was how difficult it can be to support students in maintaining bilingual skills.  We often just stress leaning English, but I appreciate that she stresses the importance of being bilingual and what a valuable gift it is to generations to come.
