         <description><![CDATA[<div>Battle of Saratoga&nbsp;<br><br>British General Burgoyne had come up with a plan to defeat the American colonies. He would split the colonies in two along the Hudson River. With the colonies divided, he was sure they could not stand.&nbsp;<br><br>The British started to run out of food so the British sent solders to Bennington for food. But, Bennington was guarded by American General John Stark. They surrounded the British troops and captured around 500 soldiers. It was a decisive victory for the Americans and weakened the British forces.<br><br>Leading a force of about 8,000 British troops southward&nbsp; General John Burgoyne had forced the American surrender of Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Edward on the upper Hudson but, his force had dwindled.&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;Many British were pick of in open fields by American long range rifles. General John sent a reconnaissance in force, using 1,500 troops in three columns under Brigadier Simon Fraser to probe the American left. When General John flanked the back of the American army.&nbsp;<br><br>Burgoyne’s army had been reduced to about 5,000 effective troops, and his supplies were running low, but nightfall ended the fighting. When it was night the British tried to retreat but,&nbsp; the Americans cut off his road out of Saratoga. The British were traped. The British surrendered to America. America won.</div>]]></description>

The general of the British was planning to split the Americans in half along the Hudson river&nbsp; so the colonists could not stand.
