One of my personal values is to start every day with grace. There is no way to know the lives of others; therefore, start every conversation, every non-verbal interaction from a place with grace. Each student then gets to start every day from with a fresh start! Letting go of yesterday’s mistakes and moving forward today with grace.

My personal values of every child is a unique individual and you never know what someone is going through and honestly just my faith influence my teaching practices. Working at a title one school, I never know what challenges my students encounter on a day to day basis and I want to be a safe space for them to come to school and have fun and learn. I want them to be able to come to me and feel supported in anything that they want to do in life.

I very much value respect. I like to communicate that with my students that I am happy to help and be there for them as long as they show respect. Often, if there is a behavior that is negative I will ask out loud if that was a respectful choice. If the class is talking over me, I like to ask if that is respectful and then we talk about what is respectful. This allows them to self-regulate their behaviors and choices. I make sure to comment when they are being respectful so that they can see it gets noticed in a positive way!

Keeping in mind that other people are entire people too is important to me. I know that when I interact with others that they might not always be having the best day, and that how I interact with them will make a difference. In my teaching I try to approach every student with this thought in mind. They are going to go home that night, and how I interacted with them will stick with them. Just as how they interacted with me will stick with me, so trying to make each interaction real and amicable is important! We both have to go home that night!

I tell my students at the beginning of every semester that knowing all the English and Math in the world will not make you a better person, nor it will it give you any kind of hope when life happens. Learning to put others before yourself, practicing that muscle, and learning to love Jesus is what will help them to see the best in themselves, in others, and will give them hope in the toughtest of times. Therefore, I make it a priority in my class that students treat each other with respect because that is what each one deserves.

I am a fun, very easy going person but with high expectations of myself, and I’ve found that this is how I approach my classroom as well. Education is a privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly or for granted, so I push my students to view education as this too. On the flip side, I will take any opportunity to goof off and have fun with my students. We should take our learning seriously, but still have fun!

Two personal values I bring into the classroom include communication and having a growth mindset. Everyone in my class comes in with a different attitude everyday and some days it can be a lot harder. My students know that if they talk to me about what is going on I'm very understanding and I work with them to have a better day. This goes alongside with a growing mindset because if I can work with them we can still learn. Even if were having a tough day because education is so important for them!
