The Sierra de las Nieves is located in the extreme southwest of the Betic Cordillera, forming part of the highest portion of the Serranía de Ronda (Málaga), constituting the highest mountains in western Andalusia, with the 1919 meter high Torrecilla Peak.

There is an enormous variety of birds raptors such as the griffon vulture, the golden eagle, the Bonelli's eagle, the booted eagle and the short-toed eagle. Also present are the peregrine falcon, the goshawk, the sparrowhawk, the common buzzard, the eagle owl, the tawny owl and the scops owl.

The Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve has a varied and peculiar climate to which it owes a great deal of its natural diversity. In a few kilometers the territory goes from high altitudes to low levels practically already in the sea, and the orientation of its mountains, are the main determinants of its climatological variety.

The greatest rainfall is collected in the central areas (approximately 1,750 mm), which are the highest.
