" The pan was too heavy for me to lift when it was full of water, so id put a chair next to the stove..." (Walls, 11) This should be a sign that she is too young to be handling this by herself.

Brian and Jeanette would go off to the dump to play with chemical and mix them together. " Brian and i decided that some of this stuff would make a neat scientific experiment, so we filled up a couple of boxes with different bottle and jars and took them to an abandoned shed we named our laboratory." (Walls, 61) They should not be playing with random, possibly toxic chemicals unsupervised.

Their parents went back to Phoenix to retrieve some of their stuff and left them with Erma. One night Erma pulled Brian into the other room to fix his pants and started touching him inappropriately, that when Jeanette came in and said "Erma, you leave him alone!"(Walls, 147) Later that night their parents returned, after their dad talked with Erma he came down and said " Brian's a man, he can take it." Instead of protecting his own children his brushed this situation off as if it was nothing.

After their mom became a teacher in battle mountain she didn't really keep up with her student school work and lesson plans. Instead, she had her kids help grade and write her students work, "At night, Lori, Brian, and I went over her students work and tests" (Walls, 74).This is not something her children should be doing when they have their own school work to finish.

Lori was in one of her moms class, the principal didn't think she was being strict enough with her students and needed to take control. So when Ms. Beatty would show up to observe, she would start yelling at Lori to prove that she could discipline her students. " One time mom went so far as to order Lori up to the front of the class, where she gave her a whipping with a wooden paddle" (Walls, 75). She should not be punishing her child because she cant discipline her students and control her class like Ms. Beatty wants her too.

The kids were really hungry, so Jeanette had eaten the stick of margarine that was in the fridge, it was the only thing that was left in the fridge. After her mother came home she looked and in the fridge and asked where it went, Jeanette replied with "It was the only thing we had to eat in the whole house... I was hungry" Apparently admitting that you were hungry was one of their unspoken rules. Her mom shouted " Its not my fault your hungry... do you think i like living like this?" (Walls, 69). Se shouldn't be blaming her kids for this if she wanted to turn their life around then that what she should do. Their father isn't working and neither was she.

Jeanette said to her mom " Mom, Uncle Stanley is behaving inappropriately" (Walls 184). She replied with "oh, your probably just imagining it" (Walls 184). She should believe her own daughter instead of pretending that sexual assault is nothing.
