Initially, the narrator sees the Cathedral as unimportant and insignificant to him since he is not religious. However, after sharing the bond with the blind man, he is able to give a more vivid physical description through drawing. Like the blind man, the narrator had a preconceived notion about the Cathedral, but when he started to draw with Robert, he changed his opinion. This shows the narrator's emotional development at the end of the story.

The physical description of the cathedral reflects the narrator's journey throughout the story because at first, the narrator was not sure where to start or even what to do when asked to describe the building. Eventually, instead of being afraid of not doing a good job of describing the building, he attacks the description and just begins describing it to the man and does a great job and they bond. This is similar to the journey he had in the story since he was not open to getting to know the blind man, but eventually became open-minded and got to know the blind man very well.

The physical description of the Cathedral reflects the narrator's emotional development and understanding. In the beginning, the narrator is skeptical, dismissive, and uncomfortable. As well as emotionally closed off. As the story progresses, Robert invites him to draw a Cathedral and blindfolds him. The Cathedral he draws is no longer just a building but a representation of connection, faith, and understanding.

Towards the end of the story, we see Robert and the Blind man drawing together. At first, the drawing of the cathedral was barren, just a box with windows and a few spirals. As the blind man and Robert continue on it gets more detailed with people, arches, buttresses, and people.

This can be compared to the emotional growth of the character seen throughout. In the beginning, Robert is seen annoyed at the blind mans presence; however slowly changing to forming a friendship.

Just as they built the cathedral, they are also building the base (out of inference) of a strong friendship.

The physical description of the Cathedral reflects the narrator's emotional and spiritual journey in a metaphorical way. When the narrator first described the cathedral it was not a good description and he did not know how to explain it. Just like at the beginning of the story the narrator was closed-minded and very dull when it came to talking about or with the blind man. But at the end of the story the narrator transfers to being appreciative, more outgoing and much more friendly to the blind man. When they draw the cathedral together, he was able to make a more vivid description.

At the beginning of the story, the narrator was very judgmental about the blind man and his disability. However, towards the end of the story he had grown a deeper connection with him as well as a better emotional understanding. His description of the Cathedral was lacking detail and thought, but after a while he was able to give a better illustration.

The physical description of the Cathedral reflects the narrator's emotional and spiritual journey in Raymond Carver's story. The narrator initially sees the Cathedral on television and isn't too interested in it, not being able to understand its significance, which reflects his emotional disconnect. When the blind man asks him to describe the Cathedral, he is unable to do so. It is only when the blind man asks the narrator to draw the Cathedral that he genuinely feels the profound beauty of the Cathedral that he was unable to describe with words. The narrator is being guided by the blind man's hands and being motivated to continue drawing reflects an emotional development of the narrator becoming fully immersed in the experience and being open and able to change.

Initially, the narrator struggles to understand and describe the cathedral, reflecting his limited perspective and emotional detachment. As he begins to draw the cathedral with Robert, he moves beyond his initial skepticism and isolation, experiencing a moment of connection and insight.

The physical description of the Cathedral reflects the narrator's emotional and spiritual journey in the Raymond Carver story in a way on how the main character changes. How the cathedral shows change because when we first see the guy talk about what the description of the cathedral is he can't explain it and we see that it's not important but once the blind man shows the narrator that he can't see it at all and it is important to some people, the Narrator changes his mind about the blind man. When the blind man and the narrator draw we see that the narrator was just as blind about the cathedral as the blind man himself.

The whole story prior to the description of the cathedral showed us the structure of the narrator's character is rigid. He is a closed minded self centered man who cannot see very far past his own pre-made opinions. Robert has a different world view, literally and figuratively. He says he's always willing to listen and learn. Even though he is technically disabled he has a huge advantage over the husband in his attitude. When Robert encourages the husband to describe the cathedral despite the his reluctance it opens the husband's eyes. The husband didn't care about cathedrals, Robert, or figuring out how to describe the visuals of a cathedral in a non-visual way. Pushing through his discomfort and finding an unusual way to describe the holy buildings forced him to grow as a person. He gained a new perspective and his mind opened a little. His judgement and reluctance became curiosity and enthusiasm.

He diint draw any details any reliligean simbals or signed that are ushely in a Cathedral. When he was drawing it. he didn't want to see what he drow. When Raymond described the Catheral he was only describing what it would look like for a person that would just see a very big building. Raymond was drunk or high from the drugs he was using so he didn't hold in anything when the blind man asked. Raymond was also very lonely and isolated himself a lot, so when the old man actly pushed to be with him and smock together, he was a little put off but slowly started to share his time with him.

He is very judgmental and seems to need proper guidance. Robert "see's" this and offers to help him draw a cathedral after discovering he can not describe it. Once they start drawing together it becomes much easier even the the point where the narrator can close his eyes and trust in the blind man to help guide him along with the drawing. This can represent spiritual belief as putting faith into a higher being and letting it guide you. After being guided he see's the cathedral in a different light than he did years before.

However when he spends more time on both the cathedral and the blind man to see past his initial judgement and he develops as a character, he finds a lot more to them than he initially thought. When he closes his eyes he opens his mind to both the cathedral and Robert. It allows he to see with a depth he didn't have before.

The way he would talk about him made it seem like he just didn't like him. Once it got to the "present", he definitely was not sober. He was drinking, and then when he started talking to his wife about the blind guy, he kind of said something that wasn't nice(mentioned his dead wife). As I read along, once the blind guy came, he was kind of nice to him, more so awkward, he was honestly making it awkward just because he was having weird conversations. I would like to say, as they started to talk more, he noticed how cool/nice the blind guy was. At the end, I will say them being high definitely made a huge difference there conversations got deeper.

We see these traits get thrown at Robert, the unknown blind stranger entering our narrator's home. The story progresses to a cathedral, where the blind man wishes for our narrator to describe it, but he has a hard time, only able to say what is right in front of him. the The blind man steps in to help our narrator not only see whats in front of him but to see beyond that. This encounter opens the mind of our narrator to see past his first judgments and to be open-minded like the blind man.

As the story progresses, during the moment when the narrator participates in the act of drawing the cathedral with Robert, the blind man, the physicality of the cathedral takes on a new meaning. Throughout their interaction, the narrator begins to open up emotionally, moving from judgment to empathy and from separation to connection. By the end of the story, the cathedral stands not just as a physical structure but as a testament to the narrator’s newfound insight. This shift in perception from superficiality to a recognition of beauty and depth illustrates the profound impact of his emotional and spiritual journey, culminating in a moment of connection that transcends his earlier constraints. The cathedral embodies the theme of awakening and the possibility of seeing beyond one’s limitations.

I think the physical description of the cathedral shows the narrator's bluntness and unimaginative mind. At the beginning of the text, he's very standoffish and doesn't see the joy in anything. He's very pessimistic and judgmental. As the text continues, he begins to warm up as a character. This, IMO, has to do with the amount of alcoholic beverages he has. The work drink is mentioned countless times, and his wife asked if he was drunk, leading us to believe this is a regular thing. The drinks help him warm up to people, and it shows. He slowly starts to try to understand the blind man and be more open-minded. While he successfully shows empathy, I do not believe that this will be a permanent thing because he will sober up and go back to his negative self.

During the short story "Cathedral" the narrator watches a TV show on cathedral's with a blind man named Robert. The physical description of the cathedral reflects the spiritual and emotional journey of the narrator during the story. The narrator gives a poor description of the cathedral to Robert at first, since he is narrow minded and not able to open up his vision of what the cathedral represents. This is similar to how he at first judges the blind man without getting to know him, and has many stereotypical expectations of what Robert will be like. Once the narrator draws the cathedral with his open and then closed, he is able to gain a new perspective of the cathedral. Similarly, when he spends time with Robert, he gains a new perspective of what the blind man is like and many of his stereotypes are proven wrong. To end, the narrator's physical description of the cathedral represents his at first narrow mind, while his later drawing represents his mind becoming more open.

His initial attempt to describe a cathedral to a blind man named Robert underscores his limited perspective and lack of imagination. The shared experience opens him to a deeper understanding of connection, perception, and empathy. This is reflected by his poorly described cathedral and broad generalizations. After getting to understand the blind man they proceed to draw the cathedral where the narrator ultimately transcends into a more enlightened self. Throughout the story, there are themes of isolation and separation with examples being the wife divorcing her first husband, the blind man losing his wife, and even the feeling that the narrator isn't close with his wife. By the end of the story, the isolation and separation the narrator feels are resolved by the drawing of the cathedral.

He manages only a few vague words about the size and the building material before trailing off, unable to think of other ways to describe it. He admits to being detached from religion as a way to explain away his lack of imagination and descriptive abilities. The blind man, however, does not particularly care if the narrator has an attachment to the cathedral or not, instead coming up with the idea of having the narrator draw out the cathedral so that he might follow along and get an idea of what it is like. The narrator does not think he is capable of doing it, but with a little encouragement from the blind man, he draws a cathedral, closing his eyes in the process and gradually coming to an understanding. This is a reflection of his interaction with the blind man in general, where he at first held no high opinion of him, but as time went he on came to an understanding with the blind man, realizing there was much more to him than what he had assumed.
