Week 1 - Researching and explore a reading app to track reading and get people to buy in

Your reflection:
Description: Beanstack reading app has already been trialled by one other school libraries in our network. It is expensive so we advertised it to other schools in our consortium to achieve economies of scale. We have a good support system for set up and continuing development.

Feelings: I am pleased that I will be able to use the skills I have used in other modules: digital libraries in particular; although this is not where I had the best grades, I have identified it as my 'growth area'. I have a lot to learn about digital systems and software implementation. So, I am happy that I will have a team of like-minded Teacher-Librarians with me on the project.

Evaluation: We took part in a zoom discussion with Felix Lloyd Brand, CEO of Beanstack, that I set up. It was good to make the personal connection and I have introduced myself to the developers and the group of teacher librarians as the person who is managing the project.

Analysis: I watched the training and implementation videos in detail as I am a digital immigrant and I will need to revisit the tech side frequently. This gave me confidence to speak in the zoom discussion.

Conclusion: Encouraging open and honest communication about my strengths and weaknesses is important. My team have offered to help me with the digital implementation and the aesthetics.

Action Plan: I will create a Gantt chart for the app implementation and update the teacher-librarians in the group.

Your reflection:

Description: I needed some support working with a colleague who did not want to get involved with the tech side of the project.

I Read the book 'Quiet Influencers' to think about how introspected people work and how to collaborate with them.

Feelings: I am pleased that I asked an experienced member of the team to come to the meetings. She was able to advise me on the way to handle the meetings, asked questions at the end about anything I had missed and was able to give me feedback following the meetings.

Evaluation: of the experience, both good and bad: I am beginning to understand the benefits of teamwork as time saving exercises for the future. Doing everything myself may be quicker short term but long term, gains can be made through connections made.

Analysis: to make sense of the situation: I need to use the expertise of others, such as people who have created challenges on Beanstack before and reuse their templates.

Conclusion: The project is moving along and I have made more professional connections with IT department in my schools and others.

Action plan: I explained to my line manager that the implementation of the project needs more time because doing a masters study involves further reading and reflection so Beanstack cannot just happen next week. She understood, and I will set realistic timelines for people in the project.

Your reflection:
Description: I completed online canva training to develop the Reading Challenges for the Red Dot Reading Challenge across the four schools. I have completed background reading from Nesta (2023) about skills needed for the future job market.

Feelings: The timelag between Beanstack in the US and all the participants in Singapore makes it slow to implement shared reading challenges so forward planning is essential.

Evaluation: I have spread this project over many weeks and it is richer for it in terms of what people have contributed towards it and the theories I have read have added weight and knowledge to the project.

Analysis: Using Canva to improve the appearance of the reading challenges and create a 'brand' has increased the students' 'buy-in' with Beanstack.

Further reading on skills of the future has been helpful for me to think of the ways that these skills are important for the future: team work co-operation originality

Conclusion: I feel that the project has become a 'package' and data analysis of the insights shows that students are becoming fully engaged.

Action Plan: Share blog with parents via parent newsletter so they understand how tracking of reading will be done before the parent-teacher conference. Present about Beanstack in staff briefing.

Your reflection:
Description: This week it is time to revisit the original objectives of the project and meet with other schools representatives to see how their Beanstack app launch has progressed.

Feelings: Managing the technical implementation of the project requires resilience and clear communication. I am using my interpersonal skills more frequently than I am used to. This is pushing me out of my comfort zone in a good way!

Evaluation: For future projects, I will not assume the technical apps for implementation are all in place. I will have the knowledge to understand the technical skills and requirements and do an evaluation before the project starts.

Analysis: Dulwich and UWC are having an easier implementation time due to their technical set up; Tanglin Trust and CIS are finding it more time-consuming due to their manual set up using CSV files and google.

Conclusion: More time needs to be spent working through the snagging document and CSV files.

Action Plan: Plan a second meeting of teacher-librarians implementing Beanstack in schools.

Your reflection:
Description: I spoke with Katie Day, my project supervisor, about the time and resources spent on the project. She feels that the outcomes will outweigh the input. I observed one of Katie's initial lessons launching Beanstack to children and I was inspired by the ease at which they used it.

Feelings: The fear I have is that the investment of time, expense and reading will not be be relative to the impact of Beanstack. If seven experienced teacher-librarians have taken a lot of time over it, will it be as labour-intensive for children, teachers and parents?
I feel more positive about the implementation in Junior School; although the Year 9 had mixed success on the launch due to the CSV file configuration being incorrect.

Evaluation: I will organise a soft launch in Junior School with the assistant Head of Year 5, we will trial it with her class; present the teachers of Year 5 and then roll out across the year group.

Analysis: Discussing my fears and concerns with Katie helped to move me to the next stage: a Year 5 pilot.

Conclusion: Sometimes, you need to step back, look at the bigger picture an reassess what your goals are.

Action Plan: ask IT to push Beanstack onto iPads during Easter hols so this does not become an onerous task during a lesson; meet with to AHOY to ask her to do the trial; organise a briefing at the Year 5 meeting; organise the library reps (student leaders) to ask children to update Beanstack one morning.

Your reflection:
Description: Beanstack app has been launched over four schools with over three thousand participants. I liaise with the Beanstack Success Manager on a weekly basis (which was much more frequently at the beginning!) and I am using Beanstack media to watch the weekly webinairs. I then post any update on the Whatapp group to the other Teacher-Librarians in the consortium.

Feelings: I am pleased about the time planning of this project. I spend a month pre-reading about the skills required for a teacher librarian.

Evaluation: I made a lot of time for the project working with my supervisor; communicating with the Beanstack Singapore collaborative and the Beanstack US team; I was in a good position knowing where my strengths and weaknesses of skills are. As I was communicating; I felt like the work was well-shared out. I am pleased with my delegation.

Analysis: Analysing the insights and reports at our school shows that all children have logged at least one book, entered a challenge and written a 6 word review following the first two lessons.

Conclusion: There is still a way to go on the project. The consortium will meet soon to plan and design the next reading challenge. I am looking forward to seeing the insights and reports for the other other schools and hearing their feedback.

She is willing to coach me on areas I am unfamiliar with.

Evaluation: I was well-prepared with Gantt chart timescale and cost (see link below) and my line manager, feels that it offers good value for money for the proposed outcomes. So the project has a green light.

Analysis: I met with my supervisor, Katie Day and we analysed what lines of communication should be set up for communication to take place: a Whatsapp group of teacher-librarians; a plea to join us at International Singaporean Librarians Network meeting in January 2023 and a presentation at Library Knowledge Sharing Workshop for Southeast Asian teacher-librarians in Feb 2023 to recap progress so far.

Conclusion: Clear communication with well-presented supporting evidence gets results!
