Ales Pushkin, 40 years old by Sun Ray

Painter, activist, and performer. From his student days, Ales was an active participant in Belarussian politics. With his art and performances, he repeatedly demonstrated his attitude towards the government, but the artist was never discouraged by the threat of detention or criminal and administrative penalties. This is what happened this time as well - Ales Pushkin, convicted for his painting (portrait of a Soviet fighter Yevgeny Zhikhar) and for participating in protests, faces 12 years in prison.
Charges indicted: art. 130 of the Criminal Code - Incitement to hatred.

“There are a lot of doors and keys in the prison. Sometimes it seems as though this is the main thing in prison. The rattle of doors, the ringing of keys - the music of the prison ... as well as the mats of the guards, the cries of those who are tortured or beaten, the barking of dogs - these are the main sounds of prison ... And only after 22:00 washbasins and toilet bowls - the night in prison has its own music of sounds. ”

Maybe when they return to the free world, to people, maybe they will take up the old again.

„... This time I am sending you a joke of a much more philosophical image: once, in captivity, to the cell, a butterfly flew in ... and those people (you call them zeki [prisoners in jargon], who got here because of their own for 99,99% choice of lifestyle, priorities) but not by mistake, or some misfortune - so these different fates, sometimes ugly and scary - react to beauty .... In different ways ... Unfortunately, all the time - 5 months - only once did I see a butterfly, a Potato bug that flew into the yard for walks, and a 1.5 cm plant that grew up in the same yard after the rains ... Unfortunately: that's all flora and fauna we have over here”.

„My cellmates are fairly isolated people (99% of them), partly gloomy, dull people, without children, so they are unresponsive, cruel (I noticed that in cell №147, out of 10 prisoners – I’m the only one who has children and a grandson - for the rest it’s good because they have (live-in) partner at least (only 2 of them do) - so they are ruthless to mice, butterflies, they also want to put them in some kind of "prison". Unfortunately, they have a "prison" mentality, although for most of them - just like for me – it was their first time in prison...”
