Confidence - I wanted to be more confident while speaking to new people.

I wanted to improve my communication skills and my confidence which I found I did achieve. I was slightly nervous anticipating the sessions but gained confidence realisong that I had the skills/knowledge/resources to provide in the role i was meant to provide in. I also found I improved my communication being concise etc but still have room to improve. I also found it helpful practicing listening to the mentees questions to respond best

I wanted to become a friendly face on campus, to help students transition into uni life easier than I did. I feel like a greatly developed my public speaking skills and am more confident than I was in January. Also, I have made a lot of new friends and greatly appreciate the genuine connections I have made along the way.

My aim as a mentor was to encourage other students and help them feel more confident in their abilities at uni. I wanted to be approachable and form genuine connections with my mentees.

Communication - I wanted to be comfortable with silence and allow the students to direct the conversation instead of me.

I am still working on being comfortable with silence as I tend to use filler words to make it less awkward.

I gained valuable skills in leadership, communication, and empathy. I learned how to support and guide new students by sharing my own experiences and helping them adjust to university life. It taught me the importance of active listening, being patient, and adapting my approach based on student's needs. I also developed more confidence in public speaking after giving presentations on the getting started day’s.

I enjoy helping people, as evident through volunteering for Orientation and Open Days in previous years. By being a student mentor, I've been able to help new students to navigate their way through university.

Since receiving training, I feel that I've developed more confidence, especially when it comes to presentation skills, and be more relaxed when doing so.

I would be more than happy to continue helping new students make their way through university.

I wanted to help others, I know what it feels like to be stuck and mentoring provided me a unique opportunity to help others move forward. I want to learn how to actively listen more and being flexible, it was rewarding to have someone tell you that you have helped them immensely.

I was hoping to expand my social skills and ability to start conversations with other people because in the past I was very shy and I rarely tried out new things that were outside my comfort zone. I think from mentoring being the one helping someone else built my confidence in communicating with others. I also realised that although being able to keep a conversation going is a valuable skill, I learned to understand the importance of being a good active listener as well which is something I am trying to work on.

I have gained valuable working experience and have connected with individuals who share similar interests. I am eager to meet more students and understand their specific needs so that I can provide better support.
