In southern England the Romans built roads, elaborate villas and settlements. The north, including the Lake District, was at the frontier of the Roman Empire, so needed military bases. Here the Roman soldiers built roads, forts and temporary camps to protect the borders and supply routes, the Hardknott Roman Fort being one of them.

●Little visible evidence survives from the post-Roman period after 400 AD. This may be because it is buried beneath present day villages. But pollen grains found in lake sediments tell us there was a new phase of tree clearance and farming in the late sixth and seventh centuries.

●It is not until the tenth century that we again find physical evidence for people in the landscape. Norse people who had originally settled in Ireland came to the Lake District to escape political turmoil. Ambleside. The historic village of Ambleside is a tiny little town that’s got a whole quaint charm about itself. Perched on the shores of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a great little spot to wander for an afternoon exploring; especially if you want to explore more of the region’s towns.
2.) Helm Crag.  It’s easily one of the best things to do in the Lake District for views and it’s not the most challenging of hikes (about 4km from the centre of Grasmere).
3.) Kendal. The historic market town of Kendal sits right on the fringes of the Lake District and will likely be your first stop if you arrive in the region by train.
4.) Buttermere and Crummock Water. It was said, that up until the last Ice Age, Buttermere and Crummock Water was one huge lake within the Lake District. That being said, since the ice and glaciers carved through this region, it cut the lake in two, creating Buttermere and Crummock Water.
5.) Blea Tarn. It might be a relatively small lake in the Lake District, but one totally serene and unspoilt place to explore. Perched just shy of Ambleside (about 4km) it’s easily one of the best things to do in the Lake District if you’re wanting some time away from the crowds.

Both are situated in the valley of Great Langdale in the English Lake District.

●Elter Water, deriving its name for the Old Norse for "Lake of the Swans", is a picturesque body of water a few miles west of Ambleside, known for its beautiful waterfall and visiting swan population.
