Knowing your students is very important when it comes to helping them learn. Being able to help them through emotional and social needs helps a teacher and a student build a better bond. Understanding that being able to speak more than one language as a teacher may help one communicate at a better level with their students. Sometimes it is easier to understand something when it is in a students native tongue, when English is hard for them. Transitioning from reading to writing and speaking to listening every day are key measures in developing another language. Knowing that one student may be more proficient in one area of the English language than another is important in communication skills. Many students may struggle with vocabulary while others excel. Knowing that there may be more than one definition for a word may cause them to only understand one meaning and not the other. There are language assessments given at schools often. Knowing the results and understanding the areas where students struggle helps teachers create lesson plans to improve these skills. The use of authentic resources can be over and under- utilized. They are generally used to help students comprehension of content. However, too much or too less of this stimulation will cause the students to not fully understand. Understanding which level of apprehension your students are functioning is important because what works for one student may not work for another. Having more than one teaching method is important. Being able to reach out to other teachers will give you suggestions and support to help you help your students be successful. Helping your students be the best they can should be your goal as an educator.

English is not always the primary language in schools. Sometimes it is a secondary or schools are bilingual. It is important to use the appropriate books for in which is needed at your school. English should be available in several different opportunities even if it is a minority language. Having an understanding and communication about stories is a great practice for English. Reading groups and pushing reading on students is another way for them to get a better understanding of English. The more they are exposed to it the better they will understand and known how to speak, write, read, and use English in life.

Making a student feel comfortable and confident in the classroom is very important. This makes them feel like you do want them there and they will be more at ease and feel safe. Keeping the kids' attention and keeping them focused are two ways make them feel less nervous, as well. One of the easiest and best techniques that we all have and may not even realize is to smile. Smiling is one thing we can do that always makes students feel comfortable and welcome. Making students feel comfortable will help them broaden themselves and want to do better. They will take risks that they wouldn't take if they were uncomfortable. Keeping a variation of books for when students do feel comfortable will help the students become more confident with languages. Vocabulary and peer pairing are two other skills that need to be focused upon in the classroom. This helps students get more comfortable and to get a wider usage of language.

When students perform poorly on assessments, have a learning disability or are behind academically they become frustrated. Material needs to be presented slow and oral presentations need a method that is used more often than oral presentations. Those that do read in their first language learn several thousand words even before learning to read. Students often struggle with academic word knowledge and abstract concepts. Helping students be aware of their thinking processes and strategies helps them be more aware of strategies they use when accomplishing tasks. Students will be able to broaden their vocabulary skills and will learn how to develop a thinking process that can be applied for problem solving. Students need to be taught how to apply strategies to other situations. When students use strategy they need to have a understanding of why this will benefit them the most and when it is appropriate to use strategies.

Visual aids and gestures are used to help reduce the time that teachers talk and helps scholars remember concepts easier. They also help make lessons more fun and add excitement. Giving students adequate amount of time to process their thoughts and words is very important. This makes them feel at ease and not stressed or rushed. Increasing vocabulary helps students through every day experiences and gives a direct learning as to having someone explain and teach words meanings to them.
