Inference: This source tells me that Singapore was a trading port before 1819 so traders would come to Singapore from around the world to trade, earning tons of money at the same time. Singapore was also in a convenient area hence it naturally draws more traders to trade here. 
Inference: This source shows shards blue porcelain found at Fort Canning dating to 14th to the 18th centuries. This shows that there was trading before 1819 as China traders might come to Singapore and trade with them.
Evidence: An early settlement on the island, called Temasek, had been visited regularly by Chinese merchants.
