a. Science: Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. It is based on observation and experimentation.

b. Technology: Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. It involves the creation and use of tools, machines, and systems to solve problems and improve human lives.

c. Society: Society is a group of individuals involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.

-science, technology, and society are all connected. Science helps us understand the world, technology uses that understanding to make new things, and those new things change how society works. For example, scientists learned about electricity (science), then invented light bulbs (technology), and now we use light bulbs everywhere, changing how we live (society). They all affect each other!

For example, there's a new app that lets people track their friends' locations in real-time. It sounds cool, but I need to think about it carefully. Could it make people feel unsafe? These are questions I need to ask and discuss with others. That means I have a responsibility to help make sure technology is used for good, and that's makes me a guardian of society.

Among the presidents of the Philippines, who do you think gave the biggest importance to science & technology during their term?

For me, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Her administration saw the enactment of several significant laws aimed at boosting the S&T sector. For example, the enactment of the "Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2007" significantly increased funding for scholarships in STEM fields, aiming to build a stronger pool of Filipino scientists and engineers. Her administration focused on strengthening the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and its various programs, leading to increased investments in research and development across various sectors. While other presidents also contributed to S&T advancement, Arroyo's focus on legislation and institutional strengthening arguably provided a more comprehensive and lasting impact on the sector. It's important to note that this is an opinion based on available information and further research might reveal other presidents with equally strong contributions.

If you will be an author of a certain LAW that supports science & technology, how would you name it and what will it contain?

If tasked with authoring a law to support science and technology, I would title it the "National Scientific and Technological Advancement Act" (NSTA). This act would establish a dedicated fund for research and development in all scientific fields, prioritizing projects with clear societal benefits. It would mandate significant investment in STEM education and workforce training programs to cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce. The NSTA would also create a network of national innovation hubs, providing researchers with access to advanced equipment and collaborative spaces. An independent ethics review board would be established to ensure responsible conduct and address potential risks associated with new technologies. The act would also include provisions for robust intellectual property protection to incentivize innovation and technology transfer to the private sector. This would be complemented by a focus on international collaboration to facilitate knowledge sharing and address global challenges. In essence, the NSTA would aim to foster a thriving ecosystem for scientific and technological advancement, benefiting both the nation and the global community.

TEACHING SCIENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES: WHY (AND HOW) WE CAN DO BETTER BY: RAFAEL AMBAG

The article correctly points out the significant challenges facing science education in the Philippines. Inadequate resources, outdated teaching methods, and poor performance on international assessments are all major hurdles. While the article presents a good overview, I wish it had delved deeper into the regional variations of these problems. A more granular analysis of how these issues affect different parts of the country would have been beneficial.

The article's emphasis on the Philippines' low PISA ranking in science literacy is undeniably alarming. Placing 77th out of 78 is a serious wake-up call. However, the article lacks a thorough exploration of why Filipino students performed so poorly. I believe a deeper dive into factors like language barriers and limited hands-on learning experiences is crucial to understanding this issue.

The lack of proper laboratory facilities in many public schools, especially in rural areas, is a critical point raised in the article. I agree that practical, hands-on experience is essential for effective science learning. The article's analysis, though, could have been strengthened by including examples of successful initiatives – schools that have overcome this challenge through mobile labs or partnerships with universities, for instance.

The shortage of qualified science teachers is another significant problem highlighted in the article. It's concerning that many teachers are assigned science subjects despite lacking specialized training. This directly impacts the quality of education. The article, however, doesn't fully explore the root causes of this teacher shortage. I suspect that lower teacher salaries in the Philippines compared to other countries might be a contributing factor.

I found the article's discussion of curriculum gaps in science education compelling. While the K-12 program aimed to improve things, it clearly hasn't addressed all the shortcomings. The need for curriculum updates to reflect global standards is undeniable. The article, though, could have been more impactful by suggesting specific reforms, such as incorporating more research-based learning or problem-solving activities.

The article rightly points out the disparity between public and private school science education. Private schools generally have better resources and technology. This inequality needs to be addressed. The article touches on this but falls short in suggesting practical solutions, such as increased government funding for public schools or collaborative partnerships between public and private institutions.

The article highlights the negative perception of science among students, which is a serious concern. Many students find science difficult and unengaging, discouraging them from pursuing STEM careers. The suggestion to make science education more engaging is valid, but the article lacks concrete recommendations. Strategies like gamification, project-based learning, and real-world applications could significantly improve student engagement.

The article correctly emphasizes the importance of teacher training. Many teachers lack the professional development opportunities needed to update their teaching methods. However, the article doesn't offer specific solutions for improving teacher training programs. Initiatives like scholarships for science educators or collaborations with research institutions could make a difference.

The limited budget for science education is a recurring theme, and the article rightly highlights its impact. However, the article doesn't explore potential alternative funding sources. Partnerships with private companies or international organizations could help alleviate this financial constraint.

The article overlooks the crucial role of technology in modern science education. Virtual simulations and online experiments can significantly enhance learning. The inclusion of this perspective would have strengthened the article considerably.

Another significant omission is the lack of discussion on parental involvement. Research shows a strong correlation between parental support and student performance in science. Schools should actively encourage parental participation through home-based activities or parent-student programs.

The article doesn't adequately address the gender disparity in STEM fields. Societal expectations and a lack of female role models contribute to fewer girls pursuing STEM careers. Mentorship programs and scholarships aimed at encouraging female participation are crucial.

In conclusion, the article provides a valuable overview of the challenges facing science education in the Philippines. The issues of resource limitations, outdated teaching methods, and the need for improved teacher training are all accurately highlighted. However, the article's impact could be significantly enhanced by exploring solutions in greater depth and by considering additional factors such as technology integration, parental involvement, and gender equity.

Addressing these challenges requires a collaborative effort. Increased government funding, updated teaching methodologies, enhanced teacher training, and increased student engagement are all essential. Investing in science education is an investment in the future of the Philippines.
