On December 9, 1973, Stacey Yvonne Abrams was born in Madison, Wisconsin. Her father, Robert, worked in a shipyard, and her mother, Carolyn, was a college librarian. Coming of age amidst the boycotts and marches of the civil rights movement, both of her parents participated. Her mother was booted off buses when she sought to seat up front and her father was beaten and jailed for his participation. With the motto "you can be anything," Carolyn and Robert raised their six children and promoted civic involvement. There were lots of family voting trips and outreach visits to jails.
