The California trail was the longest trail out of all of the trails leading west. Spanning over 2000 miles, it took the settlers about 6 months to cross the route starting from Independence, Missouri, all the way to Sutter's Fort in California. There were many motivations to take this route but the main reason why so many people were willing to take this long route was because of the California Gold Rush. A large plot of gold was discovered and people were desperate for the money that the could could sell for since many people were struggling, making just enough to support the family. Some hardships that the people on the route had to endure included crossing over the Sierra Nevada mountain range and some Native American disputes.

The Mormon Trail was a trail taken by the religious Group, the Mormans to get to Utah. This trail spanned about 1300 miles and took the Mormans about 4 months to cross it. The Mormans took this trail because after the death of the leader of the Mormons, Brigham Young rose up as the new leader of the Mormans and wanted to lead out onto a new path. Due to this action, this led to the whole Morman group leaving and traveling along what became the Morman Trail to Utah where theoretically Young thought that it was a good place to settle. However, there was not really any stated hardships that was endured along the route except for a delayed departure at the beginning of the journey.

The Oregon Trail spanned about 2000 miles too, also taking about 6 months like the California trail. Motivations to take this trail included getting to the West Coast to settle such as escaping debts from tax collectors, starting businesses, or raising a farm with fertile soil. Another reason was just for the sense of fun and adventure, and to add mission schools set ups to convert Native Americans to Christianity . Some dangers that were faced along the route included death of relatives due to accidents, Native American attacks, supply shortages, harsh weather, drowning, disease, terrain, and medicine shortages.

The Santa Fe Trail was the shorter trail of the four. Spanning only 1200 miles, this route only took about 2 months to travel and complete. People wanted to take this route because many people heard that like the California Trail, gold and silver was heard to be spotted along the route. People also desperately flew along the route in hope of finding the gold and silver in order to grow more wealthy, especially those supporting larger families. Despite the nice outlook of this route, there still were hardships faced. These hardships included arid plains, desert, and mountains. The natural climate was and is continental, having very hot and dry summers, coupled with long and bitter cold winters.
