The idea that people think that they are antiracist by saying that they don´t see race or are colorblind or there isn´t racism in a society is a reason why stories and experiences aren't being told and why there is still racism today.

I know that there's frustration and desensitization but I did not know that there is an annoyance around non-poc and non-blk assuming that poc have a fascination with speaking about race. It is work, (Chapter 9, page 3). I think its important to recognize that there is an emotional sacrifice in trying to teach others to deconstruct racism.

It's interesting how the more known interpretation of the statue is Detroit's "comeback", resulting in gentrification of people of color, which is about the opposite of the underlying message of the struggle against discrimination.

This is untrue, I knew that Jews were treated as a different race during the time surrounding the Holocaust. This fact just confuses me a little every time I think about it. Race has to do with heritage and phenotype, not religion. Religion can be practiced with people of all different races. Then again race is a social construct that was first established to separate the white man from the black man and reinforce slavery. So if race could have been invented then, I get that anti semites could have established another race to create a racial hierarchy. (189)

This is an obvious fact, but Rosa's story in Chapter 4 brought a human face to the fact that undocumented immigrants do not have access to many important things, from drivers' licenses, applying for college, etc. This is another systemic push to stop immigrants from getting the same opportunities they can to survive and to succeed. It reminds me of something that people in Massachusetts are voting on today, for undocumented immigrants to get drivers' license. This is an issue - still - today!

To name a few things: she was molested at 7, she ran away from home, she was a prostitute for a time, she went to prison many times, and she was addicted to drugs. What's crazy is that even after this traumatizing early life, she was able to find peace with herself and her past to some extent. She learned to forgive herself as well as take some sort of accountability for some of her issues.

William brought up the fact that many progressive movements in America were helped by white people who were abolitionists, anti-racists, etc. He brought this up as a rebuttal to another idea he brought up - the suspicion of white people among non-white people. This was interesting because as a white person myself I wouldn't be like "what about Thomas Garrett" if Harriet Tubman was brought up because that just feels wrong to say, almost like I'm dismissing what Tubman did.

Ronny D. talked about not understanding why his family hated Chuukese people when he was younger, but he just blindly followed their example. He would call Chuukese people "cockroaches" and pick fights with them. What's interesting is that Hawaiians of other races see Chuukese and Marchallese people as the same; yet Ronny D would treat Chuukese people as though he were above them. It is just crazy to me how blindly children follow their parents and will blindly hate other races. This all just feeds into a dangerous cycle of hate. (198)
