"A few days later, when I had been at the hospital for about six weeks, Dad appeared alone in the doorway of my room. He told me we were going to check out, Rex Walls-style.
"Are you sure this is okay?" I asked.
"You just trust your old man," Dad said.
Dad hurried down the hall with me in his arms. A nurse yelled for us to stop, but dad broke into a run. He pushed open an emergency exit door and sprinted down the stairs and out to the street."
(pg 14)
-I chose this quote because Jeannette's parents aren't like other parents. They have chosen to raise their kids different than other parents would. They took their child out of the hospital knowing that she still needed to be hospitalized. The blue person in the picture is upside down compared to the rest of the people standing up straight, representing Jeannette's parents being different.

"Dad came home in the middle of the night a few months later and roused all of us from bed.
"Time to pull up stakes and leave this shit hole behind," he hollered. We had fifteen minutes to gather whatever we needed and pile into the car.
"Is everything okay, Dad?" I asked. "Is someone after us?"
"Don't you worry "Dad said. "You leave that to me. Don't I always take care of you."
(pg 17)
- I chose this quote because the family is chaotic but stays in order one way or another. They are continuously moving from place to place. The man in the image standing on a fine line represents the wall family going from a chaotic moment to a simple moment.

"We can take care of our own"... "We don't accept handouts from anyone."
(pg 159)
-I chose this quote because it shows that the family is taking an independent stand, The image shows that he is not accepting anything from anyone.

 Fantasy vs Reality

"I never believed in Santa Claus." None of us kids did. Mom and dad refused to let us. They couldn't afford expensive presents, and they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as other kids who, on Christmas morning, found all sorts of fancy toys under the tree that were supposedly left by Santa Claus."
- I chose this quote because it comes to realize how Jeannette's parents don't want their kids to live a lie and for them to not think less of themselves because they aren't doing as other families do. I also chose this picture because it shows oppose to how Jeanette's parents have raised her. The parents in the picture are hesitant to answer the question.
(pg 39)

"Dad got out the car, knelt down, and tried to give me a hug. I pulled away from him. "I thought you were going to leave me behind," I said.
"Aww, i'd never do that," he said."
(pg 30-31)
- I chose this quote because it shows that regardless of all the pain Jeanette went through due to her falling out the car, she was able to forgive her father. The image I chose symbolizes letting things go.

Unconditional Love

"Dad saw my hesitation. He knelt so that he was looking up at me. "What is it?" he said. "Ask away." "It's big." "Just ask, baby." "I'm scared." "You know if it's humanly possible, i'll get it for you. And if it ain't humanly possible, i'll die trying." I looked up at the thin swirls of clouds high in blue Arizona sky. Keeping my eyes fastened on those distant clouds, I took a breath and said," Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?"
(pg 116)
- I chose this quote because it comes to show that Jeannette knows that her father can change himself for the better. The image represents unconditional love because even if the heart is on fire, its still there and even if the heart is bleeding cause it has thorns all around it, its still there. Therefore, representing that Jeannette's love will always be there.
