and here is what I created along side Summer as she needed two different graphics for her film 'cherry boy'

when have I had to write a report

• publishing my own methods

• researching other peoples making

• evaluation completed projects

• explaining projects in interviews

  classroom task

• what sources can be added

• how effectively is information presented

  • they didn't cut to the chase and they struggled and they didn't quite use technical language it's not formal and hard to understand however we can understand he wants to fix the length of the film and there's a lack of proof for Gregs agreement on him editing this project. the crititcal report given is about a film called about you which is an Italian short film the report is about the grade

• how effectively has the author expressed their thoughts

  they struggled to express a lot of their thoughts however they seemed to have fun with their use of language

• as well as choices that they made

  the images are greatly used

  the way he described the film could've been better but his screenshots were great

  he did the sound before editing the film

  theres a lack of references to back up specific choices such as mentioning an editor who may have made these choices work

  has no conclusion in the piece

  hed taken the edit from 18 minutes to 6

I asked a classmate and friend, Sophie for feedback on the first cut I crafted of ovens Feedback:

Shows a good understanding of the rushes given and curates a good narrative. However, lacks in a good finality.

The project could’ve made more use of L/J cuts to allow for non obvious cuts during the beginning interview and let it flow better. Personally I would’ve brought in the Furnace B-Roll a bit earlier and tried to shorten down the ending montage.

Otherwise, the flow of the edit is good and the audio levels are equal just needs some small changes here and there

Simple version:

-More L/J Cuts

-Bring Furnace B-roll Earlier

-Shorten montage at the end

-Include Graphics of names and places? I say white text for a sense of professionalism.

I noticed some glitches upon upload and I am hoping they will not persist as I am unsure how to stop them

looking at this graphics intro I realise the the winks from barbie and ken both look rather awkward when I animated them since I used the puppet tool unsure what else could create that effect as the other way I learned how to make eyes blink didn't work on barbie and ken, the glitter backgrounds did take a lot of time to create as I did understand fractal noise but I wasn't 100% sure of how to make it look better so I followed a tutorial. i found myself actually using photoshop in this which is something I don't normally use a lot, I can now say I've grown more familiar with it

if I were to make this edit again I would most likely cut out any parts in the walking tour where you cannot see anything such as walls ext

Did you know you’d enter this exact industry role when you were in university?

Personally I did. I had been editing since I was 13 and loved it, so going to Ravensbourne to study was an obvious stepping stone in my journey to get into the industry. However, I didn’t know what type of editing I wanted to do (documentary) until many years later. 

It’s also worth noting that many people on the course my year did not choose to move into the industry.

Did you ever consider other industry roles?

For a while I wanted to make my own videos, producing, shooting and editing everything myself. But I quickly discovered the part I enjoyed most was editing, creating narratives and finding the most compelling ways to tell stories.

I have friends from my course who moved into visual effects, grading and mixing - as well as a few who became producers and directors. You are certainly not limited to go any direction you want. Today, as an employer with a team under me I play a much broader role than video editor - but I still continue to edit as it’s what I enjoy most.

When creating a show reel and portfolio do you have any go to editing sub genres you always include such as ect documentary

Showreels should reflect the work you want to attract from clients. So if you want to edit documentaries, you should include as many of them as possible to signal to potential clients what type of work you’re good at. That goes the same if you want to make music videos, dramas or adverts.

I know other people who have multiple showreels, one for music, one for fashion, one for documentary etc. and they send them around depending on the client. 

What do you look for when searching a clients portfolio/ showreel?

Showreels are very good for cinematographers and colour graders, or visual effects artist to show their favourite work, but they're a really hard way to get across editing talent.

Portfolios are much more useful as I can watch how something is edited and judge whether I think it’s well made. So, if I’m looking for an editor to cut a music video, I want to watch a few of their previous music videos. If I go to their website and they don’t have any, I may not chose to work with them on this project. 

In my opinion a simple website with some of your work is more effective than a showreel, but if you can have both that’s ideal!

I have fixed some gaps I saw with the previous version, I will re watch it and reach out again for feedback once I am satisfied with how its looking

in the second cut I focused more on cutting all the uhms and ahhs out of the documentry but in the first cut I was more focused on learning how muticam works in general

and it really helped a lot with shaping the Final Cut
