I am hoping through this course I can begin to put a name to the communication tactics and expectations of diverse culture groups. I am a third-world kid, growing up in China and India, I am familiar with the concepts of caste and familial piety. I have a minor in Asian studies, and used that to leverage my Chinese language skills and understanding of culture and politics in SouthEast Asia. As a Canadian, I am subject to my own culture, which since I was in my teens has been deemed “multicultural”. As a student of theatre and policy, I am keenly interested in the dynamic of word interplay and how language shapes our understanding and expectations. My goals for this course are to commit to the reading timelines over and above my competing priorities. And to take away a new way of interpreting and applying theory from a situational perspective and find new ways of communicating and sharing this knowledge within my institution. In addition to honing my own communication skills, I want to learn new ways of sharing information with my colleagues that will improve our institutional communications.
