How does disability relate to Cinderella and The Little Mermaid?

Even though it may be assumed that the little mermaid is shown as being pitied for her lack of ability to speak, she is actually perceived as more graceful and valued because of her beauty and poise when she is on land. This is similar to Cinderellas story seeing as she doesn't always speak much because she is forced into doing tasks around the house and being stomped on by her family, but she is seen as graceful and lovely by the prince.

The magic fish uses separate fairy tales throughout the book to relate to the events that are happening for the characters. This could be similar to cinderella in how her mother actually puts her through harsh situations to try to teach her what the world is like before she succumbs to her anger.

Being gay itself isn't a disability but the time frame that the story is in and the way that some people percived homosexuality almost makes it seem like a disability which is made to be overcome.
