Q1) What are the likely tension/ conflict when we are working with people of very different background/ culture from ours?

There are many reasons for tension/conflicts to arise when we are working with people from all walks of life. Here are some of the reasons.

Firstly, Misunderstanding or miscommunication is one of the common reasons for conflicts to occur. As misunderstanding and miscommunication often cause people to lose their sense of trust especially when we speak different languages.

Secondly, Racial discrimination in the workplace are very likely to cause tension among different races working in the same company. Racial discrimination can come in many form. Some of which can be difference in wages, working condition and treatment when applying for job offer. As some company may have a preferred race they would like to hire.

Thirdly, “Personal Chemistry” may also cause conflict among people from different culture. “Personal Chemistry” includes conflicting values or actions between employers and employees as people who worked in the same place or project may not think a particular way or solution will work when problems arise.

Lastly, Leadership problems can also cause tension as some people think they are of higher authority then others and they should be leading instead of following or they simply like to pass the buck when trouble/problem becomes out of hand.

Therefore, we must be careful of how we act or what we do in a working environment as one wrong move can result in a conflict or tension.

Q2) Suggest 3 ways that may help promote harmony in workplace.

Harmony in the workplace is fundamental for a successful company especially if there are many different races in the company. A simple thing such as misunderstanding may cause conflict in the workplace.

But you may ask how then do you promote harmony in a workplace?

Well there are three simple ways.

To start, people of the same company can plan to celebrate each other cultural festivals together. This way it not only helps with understanding and respecting each other culture, it also helps to build deep and long-lasting friendships among people of the same workplace.

Moving on, promote the importance of accepting people for who they are. It is important to know that people of a different race and culture or people with disability are not inferior. Everyone in the workplace is equally important no matter how different he or she may be in terms of culture, background, physical or mentally or position. With a mind-set like this, the workplace would be more inclusive and more harmonic.

Lastly, the workplace should have a common space (eg. Food court, Pantry) for workers to wind down and get to know each other better. With better understanding comes better communication which will in turn help build harmony in a workplace.

Q3) Under Networking Strategies in Unit 5, what does it mean to "grow your relationship database"?

“Grow your relationship database” basically means to expand one’s connections structure. It means to create human connections that last for a long time (friendship). “Grow your relationship database also means to have the desire to learn and know more about the people we know or meet for the first time. How do you “grow your relationship database”? Well its very simple ask insightful questions, pay attention, make friends not “contacts”, don’t keep scores and do follow-ups. “Grow your relationship database” can sometime be easy and other times be hard. It is of up most importance that we network/connect with the correct group of people which will help both parties benefit from each other.

1) One of the likely tensions/ conflicts when we are working with people of very different backgrounds/ cultures from ours are, since our cultures may be different from one another's, when we get together, it may be hard to understand one another's differences in cultures, which may lead to disagreements with one another sometimes (Examples are: The way we dress up, our words, our actions, etc.). Yet, another of the likely tensions/ conflicts when we are working with people of very different backgrounds/ cultures from ours are, racial and religious intolerance, cultural indifference and misunderstandings, like the Maria Hertogh Riots which happened in December 1950.

2) Three ways that may help to promote Racial Harmony in Workplaces are, firstly, to mix, interact, and work with a diverse of people with different races and religions. Secondly, employers to hire employees of a diverse races and religions, and not just the employees of the same race and religion as him/her (The Employer). Lastly, for both the employees and employers to be accepting of one another's races and religions (Not just their own, but others' as well), and not to criticise it.

3) To "Grow your relationship database" means that, we should work to develop a core relationship with individuals of different races and religions, which you may not know that they have an influence in areas that we may aspire to grow, and learn from them. :)

1] I feel that most won't understand other people's culture and practices and such cases may lead to misunderstanding. Additionally, I think they would have different ethnic groups working together instead of different people. With this, I think people would have rumor-based ideas on certain religions, and stick to their assumption. 2] i) Mixed ethnics in the same group. ii) Clarity towards each other's culture and beliefs. iii) Lastly, being respectful to each other's culture and beliefs. 3] This can be expanded by visiting ones cultural place and performing their prayers. This will lead to better understanding on how, why they pray and who they pray towards. This also clears rumors about other cultures that the people might have embedded in their minds, and clears out any dispute.

Question 1) Some of the likely tensions and conflicts that are bound to happen when we work with people from different background/cultures include different languages, approach to complete tasks, attitudes towards disclosure of emotions. Different languages create different ideas put across from different races, causing them to misunderstand each other and cause conflicts. For example, a Chinese using mandarin to speak to a Malay in a workplace. Since both of them do not use the same language and words, it makes the communication ineffective and prevents messages from being conveyed from one another. Ineffective communication causes tensions and conflicts between people of different background and culture, which might lead to racial riots. Approach to complete tasks will also cause tension. This is shown as from different culture, there are different ideas and ways on how to complete tasks. In fact, most Asians tend to develop relationship at the start of a group project, while the Americans tend to finish the group project at hand, then developing relationship. This will likely cause tensions because people working together of different backgrounds misunderstand of not doing the project, thinking that they are lazy, which in fact, they only take some more time to complete the task at hand. Lastly, the attitudes towards disclosure of emotions cause conflicts due to some culture feeling inappropriate or shy to be frank with their emotions for the reasons of the conflict or misunderstanding. This causes the people from different culture to misunderstand them, having a perception that "I'm fine", which they will continue to do things that will anger different people towards this issue. Hence, these are 3 likely tensions that will appear when we work with people of different background/culture of ours.
Question 2) Ways to promote harmony in the workplace include setting ground rules to the workplace, using common language and clear communication between one another in the workplace. Setting ground rules that include behaviors between different people that are not tolerated in the workplace can help as people will abide to this rules and maintain a harmonious workplace. Using common language such as English will help to break misconception and put the idea across from one another in the workplace. Clear communication means that different people speak their mind out when they are not happy with one another of different culture doing things that do not please them. This will surely reduce the tensions and conflicts, promoting harmony in the workplace.
Question 3) Growing your relationship database in my opinion means to make friends with different culture and understand them, so that people will not cause issues between each culture. This will create a bond in the workforce or school, maintaining harmony.

As in what they consider in their culture is a social norm but to us its not.

Q2) By Opening up to each other learning about each others culture. Secondly try to not stick to one race in the work place but rather try to group up with people with different races so social segregation is not a thing in the work place. Lastly try to use a common language at work so to not misunderstand but rather forge a better friendship between each other.

Q3) It means that to widen your social circle. Not only stick to people of your own race but to mix with other races as well not only races but about gender and all so for example your group of friends dont only exist only Chinese males but a mix , a social cohesion. So basically do diversify your choice of relationship and not only stick to one

1. The causes of conflict/tension when we are working with people of very different background/culture from ours is that we or they won't understand how we live our life here, the miscommunication of the different language barrier and due to different races, cultures, beliefs and racism will most likely draw the tensions and conflicts.

2. The 3 ways are :
- Learn to understand and accept different cultural beliefs
- Treating people with respect
- Love one another

3. Just because you're born in a family of the same religion and the same race, it isn't necessary of you to find and be friends with people who share the same beliefs/similarities as you. To expand your relationship database means that you need to widen your social life, your social circle, basically. Explore the different types of cultural roads in others, learn different languages, be diverse with all the different upbringing of different people and understanding others is the most significant because it is the exploration and acceptance that will bind all of us together in harmony and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each of us.
