Key factors include:

Innovative Product or Service: The business should offer a unique, differentiated product.

Competitive Advantage: Sustainable competitive protection through intellectual property, market position, or unique capabilities is important.

Proof of Concept / Traction: Demonstrable evidence that the product works and that customers are willing to pay for it is crucial.

Large Market Opportunity: Investors seek businesses targeting sizable markets.

Business Plan and Strategy: A well-prepared, focused business plan with clear direction and a strong go-to-market strategy is crucial.

Levi Roots' pitch has adequately addressed these criteria:

His hot sauce is unique - not only can it provide spice via Scotch bonnets but also has great flavor from the allspice and Caribbean herbs creating a unique BBQ flavor.

The product has a competitive advantage because most hot sauce on the market can only provide spice with minimal flavor. Thus, Reggie Reggie sauce stood out for it's complex flavors while not compromising on the spice.

He had successfully provided a proof of concept for the investors to try, increasing his product's credibility because the investors can try first-hand what it is, alongside its strength and weaknesses.

The product chosen, hot sauce, is located in a large market. This makes investors more willing to invest as it is not a niche market nor it will fizzle out any time soon. This fact ensures the product will stay relevant and remain a source of revenue for the future.

However, he has not met the last criteria: a business plan and strategy. Even though he did put forward a financial plan, the numbers were miscalculated and the "order" he got was not even an order - it was more so of a supplier contract. Therefore, it will be beneficial for him to draft up a business plan, putting emphasis on the financial plans and targets, ensuring numbers are properly calculated.

Investor readiness and financial projections are crucial in securing finance because:

Investor readiness means a business is well-prepared with a clear plan and compelling materials, which builds investor confidence and speeds up funding decisions. This increases the likelihood of successful funding.

Financial projections provide a detailed roadmap of expected revenue, expenses, and profitability, demonstrating the business’s viability and growth potential. They help investors assess risks, returns, and the startup’s understanding of its market and strategy. This helps investors made better decisions on what their investing into, and only positive and realistic startups and firms will be considered.
