In 2021, Mr. Sands brought his years of executive management experience to the SHP Foundation, a Palo Alto, California-based organization that works to provide housing for low-income and homeless populations throughout the Bay Area. As chief operating officer, he manages the foundation's $14 million budget and ensures that projects are completed on schedule. It was a very sudden transition, and I was stepping into a new industry so I had to learn the environment, determine the issues in the organization and lead a team that in some cases liked the previous boss a lot more than they liked me. I learned quickly that being a leader is not just about being the boss. Guiding a team to success is about getting them to all row in the same direction. I was responsible for the team working together toward a common goal and following a set of shared values in a positive climate.
