The cyanide pollution of the rivers Szamos and Tisza was

caused by AURAL, an Australian-Romanian point venture that is situated in
Romania’s Baia mare region. The cyanide in these areas was used to extract left
over metals from waste rock around the mine region. This process requires lots
of water which is why the mines are placed next two water ways including the
Zazar and Lapos which belong to the catchment area of the Szamos River. An
extraordinary event to place 10pm on the 30th of January 2000 where
100 thousand mega litres of wastewater with a high concentration of cyanide was
discharged into the water ways leading to Szamos River. Another event occurred later
close to the first incident, however it was less serious to the first event.
This then exceeded the water ways percentage limit of cyanide by sixty. It then
flowed into nearing towns flooding them in orange cyanide water. Killing crops
and destroying homes and destroying the water source.

Although the Cyanide pollution doesn't seem like a big problem it influences life on Earth. The Szamos-Tisza Cyanide Pollution problem is affecting biosphere when the water intoxicates birds, mammals by oral inhalation in the vicinity of height cyanide concentrations. The issue is also currently affecting the hydrosphere when the cyanide pollution pollutes the water and then it travels through multiple water ways in the oceans also causing harm to sea creatures. The Biosphere is impacted by this event because when the water is polluted, it kills the fish which is effecting there prey and the rest of the aquatic food cycle. There are numerous examples of extremely high conditions of concentraction of oil, gases and nutrients which are not connected with human activity at all but are still effected from the problem of cyanide pollution. One main important part of the Cyanide pollution which is a sub effect is that the existence of marine creatures could be increased after the problem has been resolved which may increase levels of enclosed seas and coastal waters as compared with the open ocean.

How many organisms where effected in the event?

Considering that both cyanide and metal complexes of cyanide cause direct acute toxicity in living organisms getting in contact with them, it is important to have thorough knowledge of the toxic effects of these substances on certain groups of living organisms and on their habitats. It also helps to determine the degree of damage in different groups of living organisms.
The toxic effect of the lowest concentrations of cyanides can be detected in the case of fishes, zooplanktons and benthic organisms. The toxic effect on the phytoplanktons (algae) is caused by 4-6 times higher concentrations than in case of the fishes, while in the case of certain benthic organisms this concentration is even higher. The issue of accumulation of pollutants in the living organisms and especially in fishes should also be taken into account.
Beyond the individuals of aquatic organisms other ecosystems having contact with the aquatic environment (birds, mammals, macro vegetation etc.) can also be damaged.
