While studying for your degree, you have been volunteering with ABC, a student support group for individuals who have experienced domestic violence, or coercive and abusive behaviour. The idea behind ABC is to empower individuals and to encourage them to engage with opportunities at university, i.e. to build their confidence.

You think that ABC could apply for some university funding to hold community workshops and/or outreach groups. In order to get the funds, you need to write a proposal: you need to include examples of how and why the money would be really helpful but, as you feel unsure as to whether your bid will be successful, you decide not to tell the group that you are applying.

Transparency: By not informing the ABC group about the funding application, I am withholding information that directly affects them. If the application is successful, they may be surprised or even feel betrayed that they were not consulted.

Responsibility: If the application is successful, who will manage the funds? Will I be responsible, or will ABC take charge? Without prior agreement, this lack of clarity could lead to conflicts over financial management and program execution.

The potential harm to ABC's credibility: Many funding bodies expect applicants to be authorized representatives of the organization they are seeking money for. If the application gives the impression that ABC has approved the bid when it actually has not, this could be considered misrepresentation and harm the credibility of the organization.
